weve got a b&s 6hp intek in a wee ride on mower. starts first time every time on the pull cord... on the starter motor it wont fire on a cold start.... works fine on a warm start ... even a couple of minutes running after a pull cord cold start is enough .

this has been put together out of a couple of part machines...tried 2 different (used)starter motors, carb cleaned, valve clearances set , throttle/choke cable adjusted. ignition is wired to a kill switch not through the key switch ... key switch is wired direct to battery and (new) starter solenoid so no safety cut outs anyhere to interfere. battery is new.

using the pull cord for a cold start is no big deal , it starts first pull , but its bugging me.

about the only thing i havnt tried/swopped is the air filter element .... but the other one was two kitchen foam scrubby things :o

guess when its stopped raining ill try a cold start without the filter in. would a dirty filter slow the cranking speed?

When an engine is warm things have expanded and fuel will vaporise easier, I had an old Cortina that was a pig to start cold, needed the choke out. Put some slig 50 in it and thing was like a sowing machine and it started no bother. Sadly the floor was falling out of it and it failed it's MOT.

When you try to start it on the key are you getting a spark at the plug

yea the ignition kill wire goes straight to a toggle switch to earth , so weve eliminated a faulty key switch and any safety cutouts

When we were having problems getting our previous ancient mower, especially a period of inactivity started a friend recommended a few minutes heating up all the component parts with a hot hairdryer plugged into an extension lead. I can't t say whether it would have worked because we ended up deciding it was time to buy a new mower.
