Second year use of my Bosh electric mower. I have a new blade ready to be fitted for use this year.

Should I expect to have to replace this mid season?

What are your thoughts/experiences

Hi Colin. With all mowers and particularly electric it is important to keep a sharp blade regardless of parts of the season. A blunt blade takes more energy to cut the grass, in fact a blunt blade doesn't cut grass it smashes it. If you don't have a grinder buy yourself a decent quality file with a handle and always check your blade is sharp. It amazes me how just cutting grass dulls a blade even if you didn't bump into a stone.

Kept sharp I can get 5 or more years on a rotary mower blade

I used have a lawn mower that never had a change of blades must have had it 10+ years.

Now taking a serious interest in new garden it seemed to make sense to have a sharp blade. I notice that towards the end of last year the grass showed a yellow tinge at the top and looked torn.

Thanks for your comments, which are very helpful.

metal blades only need replacing if they get bent by hitting something hard, takes a lot of sharpening to wear them away.
the less said about plastic blades the better.
