brass outside tap adaptor

I am having trouble finding a replacement tap adaptor for my push on hose fitting. I have bought several tap connectors, all with 2 sizes, 3/4 and 1" to attach directly to the outside tap. None of them fit. Does anyone know of a specialist supplier I can speak to, to try and find one that fits? I thought all taps were the same size, but mine must be an oddity. The one that was on ther previously was stuck fast into a broken 2-way spiltter, so went in the bin. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would have any trouble fitting a replacement.

There is another size but I can't find a reference to it quickly. Where does yours come; smaller than both ¾" and 1" or between them?

I think I know the one you mean, it's smaller, yes ? It has to be a BSP thread so it'll be 1/2" BSP. If thats the case you can get a 1/2" to 3/4" bush.

sorry Richard it seems to be in between the 3/4 and 1" ones, I am stumped! the original adaptor, which is long gone in the bin, I bought without thinking or measuring, it just fitted.

You've got me stumped now.

How old do you think this tap is ? I have seen taps with 1/2" BSP threads on the spout. The more usual are the same size as the outlet on appliance taps which is 3/4" BSP. Are you saying it be 5/8" BSP ?

I don't think I have ever seen one though if I saw it it may jog my memory. 5/8" BSP is unusual, in my memory only specified fittings for special applications used the thread.

If it's 5/8" I doubt you'll get a bush to get the tap to fit usual tap connectors. What I suggest is you buy one of those plastic/rubber fit-all type of fitting and has a jubilee clip to hold it to the tap. The other end just plugs into hose fittings.

Eureaka, I just remembered I did come across this when we were on the island of Tiree a few weeks back. The only place we could get water was at the village of Scaranish. They had a tap with an odd fitting and my recommended connector just went right over the thread.

Saw them in the 99p store today - In a set with the two hose ends and the tap thingie with the jubilee clip. I nearly got one as a spare as I just put the last one I've have on the shared tap at lottie. Bit cross as we keep it on the tap permanent & it has been there for about 4 years until someone obviously took it off with their hose. Most of the others using the tap didn't have one so they had to resort to cans.

I've mostly been inhaling from this forum, it's good to breath out on the odd occasion.

I saw an ornamental tap, there was a frog I think and other choices. Not sure where I saw them but they looked as if they had a 1/2" or maybe 5/8th thread.

Nice idea for a garden tap away from the boring regular but I can't remember where I saw them.

I reckon mine is a 5/8" Richard, so some investigation is required as the rubber/jubilee clip combo only seals so tight.

What I did with my rubber-thingy so fit's odd sizes that I came across that I now assume to be 5/8th is, I cut some of the inside rubber vanes away. In any-case I found I had to screw it on and didn't need the jubilee clip.

We run a motorhome and visit sites that are nothing more than a field with a tap and a pit dug in the ground for chemical toilet disposal. I bought that rubber adaptor because I kept coming up the strangest tap combinations.

Once I was expected to connect to an old bath tap with a massive oval spout, I still haven't figured what I need to take with me just in case I come across another bath tap co-opted into service from the scrap heap.

The bath tap would have had a 3/4' thread and it would be fairly easy to connect it to the blue pipe. You've obviously had some experiences yourself so you'll know about compromises.

Many years ago, 'When-I -was-a-lad', there was a campsite in Derbyshire where you turned the tap on and the Mains-water-water cascaded down a piece of gutter for collection. Or you were invited to pick up your own from the steam.

That was before liver-fluke and the other things we could get poorly from were invented.

I made it. So-far.

On a serious note, taps harbour some nasty bugs.Inside and around the spout should always be cleaned if your immune system is slightly compromised. This not only applies to campsites and outdoor facilities but in your home no matter how meticulous you are.

If you use an anti bacterial then use that to squirt the inside of the spout just before you go to bed. Do as I say not as I do because I mostly forget.
