New research proves what most parents knew all along, that of all veg, carrots are tops with the UK’s children. And that’s a good thing for as top TV chef Jamie Oliver says: "Carrots are brilliant – full of vitamins and extremely good for you."

Some 53 per cent of children surveyed by the British Carrot Growers Association chose carrots as their favourite vegetable.

But what do they know about the humble root? Well encouragingly 75 per cent were familiar with the saying that carrots can help you see in the dark, an adage which has its basis in fact since carrots are rich in Vitamin A, essential for healthy eyesight. And, says the research, the good news continues, with two out of three children surveyed knowing that they should be eating five portions of fruit and vegetables a day.

Sadly however, the attitudes of parents don’t seem to reflect this; according to the latest National Diet and Nutrition Study of Children, less than 10 per cent of schoolchildren are actually eating their five a day. So while the Government's message is clearly getting through to the children, parents still need to change their food buying and cooking habits.
