Dear KGM Editor.
would it be possible for you to produce a series of articles on fruit about the ripening times of various varieties. I have been trying to decide which kinds of soft fruit to grow and want to have as long a season as possible. This will involve growing multiple varieties of each kind but the space I have is not unlimited and they are to be used fresh rather than processed. I appreciate that not every season will have the same ripening dates but a general idea that A will ripen first followed by B then C would be very helpful. Looking at the various vendors webpages has not been terribly helpful.
I expect Brogdale has the information but it is not on their website.
Regards Sally Wright.

Deacons fruit tree specialist's catalogue gives all the information you mention and lots more.

Dear PP,
no it does not. The descriptions of the currant varieties are so brief as to be completely useless.

Sorry about that Sally. I've always found their info on top fruit extensive, but must admit I haven't researched soft fruit recently. I got both the varieties of white currants I wanted but may have checked their fruiting times elsewhere. So as you say it would be useful to have a quick point of reference.

I have scoured the internet and come up with nothing of use really. Even the RHS which has the national collection of redcurrants is useless. I appreciate that climate and location will alter actual picking times so I am not after exact dates here, just a nice little bar graph which shows when they will ripen in relation to each other.
Regards Sally Wright.

I've just pulled a very dusty copy of RHS Fruit by Harry Baker off my shelf which, as well as cultivation instructions, list varieties of everything in order of ripening. Reds go: Jonkheer Van Tets, Laxtons No1, Red Lake, Rondom. Whites go White Lake then White Versailles. Some of these varieties may have been superseded as the book was published in 1984. Pub. Mitchell Beazley. Might be worth a search of ebay for a secondhand copy?
