Re: Courgette flowers

We always pick a few courgettes when they are small and have the flowers intact. Then we stuff them with cream cheese, herbs, chillies, whatever and deep fry in a tempura batter. You can do the same with just the flowers when they are a bit bigger. Once you leave them on the fruit for a longer time,...

Re: cherries

We put fleece over a couple of trees in the hope of getting some cherries. Nets don't work because the birds just use the links to peck through the holes!

Re: Won't be storing much Fruit!

We've got lots of plums and damsons, very few cherries, hardly any apples or pears, but lots of soft fruit, including currants ad gooseberries. a very peculiar year.

Re: Dissapointing Patio Potatoes

And at this time of the year - when we've run out of room to top up the soil - lots of regular feeds.

Re: ASPARAGUS

I'd agree. We started a third bed off this year with crowns from the Isle of Wight which were so cheap! They've all produced spindly spears in their first year so I'm hopefull this will be a good future crop.

Re: Dissapointing Patio Potatoes

We always do a series of potatoes in tubs in the tunnels (13 this year) with the aim of having early crops. They take a lot of water and feed but they're always first class in terms of yield and taste. We only put 3 tubers into each barrel and we top up the soil - a mixture of manure, chicken pellet...

Re: Asparagus - To feed or not

We dress our beds with well rotted manure mixed with chicken pellets. On a few occasions, we've added sea weed when we've had a winter trip to the coast. The dreaded beetle is a menace but so far we've avoided them.

Re: How can I save this broken chilli plant stem?

It will re-root, just like tomatoes, either in water or compost.

Good luck!

Re: Some things really like this wet weather !

We've had a forest of asparagus this year, thanks to the rain, and the potatoes look promising, but the fruit's quite a way behind.

Re: Basil

Basil needs 70F to germinate as well as some light. Although it's part of the mint family, it isn't as robust as it's relatives and it's an annual. You might want to add a few other varieties of basil - such as Thai (as suggested), Siam Queen, Holy Basil, white or purple - as the flavours are great.

Re: Full Stop!

We've got the same problem in our tunnels. Tomatoes, cucumbers, aubergines, peppers and chillies about a fortnight behind - lack of light I assume.

I would concur Marigold. I don't think the man (Peter) meant to insult you, as OH meant no harm to Monika.

Why don't we put this behind us and start again?

Re: Greedy bunnies

Shoot them. We had 25 years without them and have been invaded by them for the last 5 years or so. Resorted to trapping and shooting, as we have with our new predators - squirrels. I would be happy to have mice back. :)
