One of the great joys of allotmenteering is that there is no government directive on how tis done. I may be a shedless wonder, but my plot boasts a unique collection of hand crafted compost bins (which have been universally admired I may add ) and an embryo veg cage - I will have peas this year desp...

Hi Mandylew If you sow seeds produced by an F1 plant, you can get very variable results. They usually germinate and do the biz, but you won't get the same squash as the one you bought. Could be different but nice. Could revert to be more like one of the parent varieties, or some latent genetics can ...

At the risk of spawning a heated debate, I would say don't feel too bad about your imported toms Barry. The heating & lighting costs involved to produce tomatoes in northern Europe over winter would be environmentally even worse than shipping them in from further afield. If that's what you fancy...

I'm not allowed a shed on my plot either but I have a large yew tree in the boundary verge next to me that makes an excellent umbrella in bad weather.

I sit in my barrow to drink my coffee, which is fine till you want to get up and only have little legs  Amuses the neighbours no end

She must be a blooming saint I'd say

You are right about the penstemmons  They were out of control, so had to do it and then give them a bit of frost protection. Got away with it before so I reckon I'll be OK.

I think you are right Granny. Cows and other animals that chew the cud have multiple stomachs and keep the grass fermenting away inside them for much longer. I've never eaten horse, but I have bought and cooked goat in a west indian style curry. Very nice it was too. My husband is a bit of a wild fo...

Had a good weekend?

Apologies in advance to anyone who has had rotten weather, but at last my weekend off coincided with decent weather The allotment is too wet to dig, but harvested some leeks. Then strode about purposefully making grand plans for this year At home replaced the wooden edges for 3 of the raised beds at...

oops  - forgot to say - the old boys said to be able to cut a couple of times a week for 2 people, I needed a dozen plants. You cut for 6 weeks only, so 12 plants gives 12 asparagus dinners.

Hi Seedling. I'm not a great expert but have ventured into asparagus growing myself recently, so here is my experience. Whatever you do, do not buy pre-pack asparagus crowns from the garden centre. They are usually from Taylors Bulbs and are cheap rubbish. A fellow plot holder tried them last year o...

Hey it could be worse  As Victoria Wood says, the day to worry is the day you find yourself looking at Scholl sandals and thinking oooh, those look comfy.

Me..........I found myself doing the very same in M&S t'other day at the FootGlove range  I'll be buying Damart undies next

My husband caught himself jangling the change in his pocket while waiting at the petrol station tills the other day. He's also started adjusting his specs just like his dad does. He's very depressed at these signs of impending old git dom.

I didn't laugh........much

Soggy Peter - ain't the half of it Today I have been mostly squelching round the plant area at work trying to make half drowned plants look good. My allotment is a sea of puddles and muddy clay - if it carries on like this I may consider ditching the potatoes this year and having a go at rice Sue

Thanks all - looks like we are rather over-egging it with our prices then Guess what OH - I did have another trip and we nearly missed the plane again. This time a visit to Germany. We flew out last Monday and came back Tuesday pm. I couldn't get herself shifting Monday morning so we left work late ...
