Re: Storing Celeriac
Dear JB, there was only a couple nicked but I know from experience that once this sort of thing starts it goes on. Someone had had 1/2 a row of parsnips and also a whole row of leeks as well. During the summer I lost masses of beans and courgettes although I am not too worried about that as I grow F...

Re: Storing Celeriac
Dear Colin, the secrets of growing large celeriac are not down to the variety but the length of the growing season you can provide. What this means is that the seeds should be sown now and pricked out into cells. Around the beginning of April they should be potted on into 3-4" pots and grown on...

Re: When to start chitting potatoes
Dear April, pfa take so long to chit and grow that I never bother and simply sling them in during the last week of February (location - Cambridge). The blight gets them by the second week of July here so it is the only feasable way of getting a crop. I find they need a minimum of 20 weeks from plant...

Re: Corriander fighting the frosts
Dear GS,
if planted late, as your coriander probably was, it will act as a biennial. So you can leave it where it is for now, cover it with a cloche if you want, but it is very hardy and will give leaves until about April when it will start to flower.
Regards Sally Wright.

Dear All, there is a specialist product out there called linseal. It is designed to be used with low pressure low speed tyres from wheelbarrows to ride on mowers. What you do is take out the valve and squeeze this stuff in. It then coats the inside of the tyre and seals any holes as they form. The t...

Dear Mel, if you want, you can re-do them. Go back to the point in the recipe where you add the sugar and repeat the steps after that. You can repeat most recipes for jams, pickles and chutneys if you forget something as long as you reheat them to sterilisation point and don't try to reuse any of th...

Dear Skip, what you have sounds very much like parsnip canker and hollow crown is not the most resistant variety around. I would recommend gladiator for next year and do not grow them near any carrots as the flies will attack the parsnips and allow the canker to spread. Make sure you rotate properly...

Dear Stephen, I find that the planting time is about the date for your first frost. This allows the onions to put out their first leaves as Monica says and not to grow too large before winter sets in. If they do go in earlier than that and get too big then there will be losses due to winter kill and...

Dear Nemo, the flowers have not been pollinated properly and the only way to deal with that is to hand pollinate with a soft brush between the male and female flowers. You will not have to do many as I would recommend setting no more than 3-4 fruit on each plant this late in the season. For future y...
