Re: NETTING RECOMMENDATION

Dear Compo,
the netting should have a mesh size of less than 1/2", ideally 1cm. Sorry to mix measurements but it is easier to say it this way. Anyway, this will keep the adult butterflies out.

Re: Poor tree

Dear HM,
prune the apple as hard as you dare. The less leaves it has to fill with water the better.

Re: CITRUS TREES

Dear Westi,
it is probably not a very good idea to use warm water. However it IS a good idea to use rain water for them. Citrus like acidic/lime free water to do well. Use ericaceous composts and feed.

Re: Pots - to wash or not to wash?

Dear All, the only pots I wash are my seed trays and half pots used for cuttings and seed sowing. I have roughly 3-5000 pots on the go in any given year and have not had any problems. I don't bother to wash the cell trays I use either. I do however sort them and stack them so I know exactly how many...

Re: FOXES

Dear Shallotman, I am reliably informed (not having tried this myself) that human p**s will discourage the foxes. Btw don't leave bonemeal where cats and dogs can get at the bag. My cat slashed open the bag when I left it in my hallway. He ate a considerable quantity of it which he then proceeded to...

Re: Jeyes Fluid advice needed urgently

Dear Larkshall,
the term jeyes fluid is a trademark and is thus registered and cannot be used by anyone else. It is still available as a household cleaner it simply cannot be used in the garden as a soil sterelant.

Re: greenhouse thermometer

Dear HM,
there may be a tiny bead of mercury jamming the indicator. If there is you may have to shake it to dislodge it. This is a common thing caused by rough treatment in transit.

Dear Peter,
sympathies.
there is a special security paint that never dries, could some of that be smeared over the chain link. It may stop further incursions.

Dear Geoff
what about a router with a grinding bit in it. Use a guiding roller and a letter template.
Or of this is too much bother get in touch with your local funeral directors for the telephone number of their monumental stonemason.

Re: Tits nesting immediately next to veggie patch

Dear Primrose, try not to look directly at the box when you are working near it. Keep work within 3 metres at about 15mins a time, then leave well alone for about 1/2 an hour and only work nearby when the weather is good so that any interuption to the feeding patterns is easy for them to make good. ...

Re: Branding irons for wooden tools

Dear JJ, I was planning to allow everyone at the plots to use the branding letters as a site wide thing to upgrade the security of the whole site. With hopefully a branding and marking day/ picnic. A pyrograph tool is not going to mark the tools deeply enough to make them less attractive to thieves....

Branding irons for wooden tools

Dear All,
anyone know where I can purchase a set of letters and numbers for branding wooden tools. If you look at timely warning you will see why this is necessary. We don't have power at the site so the type that go into a fire are the ones we want.

Re: Timely warning

Dear All, in the end the total of sheds attacked was 13 with one attempted and one who had left tools out had a spade nicked. The good news so far is that 5 victims have all their tools back and several have some of their tools back. They had tried my shed but failed to gain entry. It seems to have ...

Re: Timely warning

Dear Beryl, they've been here in Cambridge as well, we have had 10 sheds done over but I think they were disturbed as they left a lot of the tools and we have been able to gather them up. Out site is not fenced so it is an easy target. The only thing in our favour is that because it is not fenced an...
