Re: Compost bins
Hmm PP! Neighbours have chickens, their ruddy rats prefer my compost to theirs! That sounds wrong as they are very clean & caring for their chickens, so obviously rats like my pile better! I have chicken wire lining the bottom of my compost bin but the little guys are burrowing into the main dum...

Interesting PP!
Haven't read the mag yet! Potato bags make sense - loose soil, easily warmed by the sun, good root run! Hmm! I have one deep bag in the Greenhouse without a clear contender to fill it! You may have tempted me!

Waiting for the water board to stop the fountain & his land to dry out to dig again? Chasing the archaeologists off his plot? Trying to do a deal with the Natural Museum to explore the cave & remove the dinosaur bones? Wondering if the allotment insurance covers sink holes? Checking the deed...

Pickled Rainbow Chard
Just opened an e-mail from KG Zeddit folk with a recipe for this. It looked so colourful & I thought actually it could be a good way to preserve some. Chard I like, but the stalks can be a bit bland but they take up other flavours well. Unfortunately I have no decent stems left as been harvestin...

Hi Lez
I think to be successful depends on the length & heat of the Summer, probably even more than the right soil or watering. Fingers crossed for that then!

Hi Primrose
I put a couple of drops of vanilla in my rhubarb which seems to lessen the amount of sugar needed. I also use granulated sugar substitute sometimes. But you could try natural sugar substitutes, (guava I think is one), or maybe honey?

OMG! Welcome indeed! Your pics are our dreams! You've got the growing & the animals! Post away Oakridge - give us advice when we ask! You are obviously well beyond an allotment or 2! Westi PS: So glad you took the leap to post! We never bite - but do stray off the veg topic now & again! Join...

Re: New Website - What do you think?
I wouldn't like to see the old post removed, but the same people would post their same good advice if someone new asked a pertinent question so wouldn't be lost. I try to go back to old posts to find things I want to know but list is really long now! I agree - ask the new folk what they want. They (...

Ha Ha Pa!
Obviously being in health care my nails have to look clean & short. Short not the problem, but do have to bleach them quite quite often when I have the 'Glove Fail'!

Didn't mean to embarrass Pa! Just your story is so inspiring & your attitude is to be envied. Maybe 'Happy Growing" then.

Re: How are your seedlings doing?
Silly me today! Sowed some catnip for the furry ones so today thought I would pot it on. There was one in the pot that had a similar leaf but was a bit hairy. Noted the hair but ignored the plant - until I thought I'd have a big sniff of the mint to see how pungent it was! The hairy one was a nettle...

Glad you had a saving on your laptop Marigold, expensive investment & you are truly at the lap of the gods whether you get a good one or 'the difficult one' (Excuse the pun). My cheapest was my favourite, gone back to a 'proper' computer now & saved up for an iMac - it's turning out to be a ...

That would be more than sufficient it you are going to make them climb. Mine were a bit nearer about 2 foot & very hesitant to climb so I gave up on that & let them do their own thing (although I did try to direct them around in a coil). Again they were a bit stubborn to do that as well but ...

Re: New Website - What do you think?
There is another magazine, who for some reason won't let me post anything on their site, but what I can see is they have more participation from new & old members. Are we too imbedded? Too much of our old posts showing to scare off new members? If you look at how many read our posts it's quite h...

Are you guys all out of the same mould? We are now considering how to move same shed if they find us a new site anytime soon! I'm pretty sure it will survive just being picked up & put on the back of a truck! Mr Westi was pretty enthusiastic about re-enforcing the shed when we bought it & th...
