Re: Quince Tree Varieties

Vranja is a good one, it's the one I have. I think most are grown on rootstocks these days. The most beautiful blossom too.
Try Adams Apples or Deacon's on the IOW, where I go mine from.
Hope that helps.

Re: Old Seeds

Test a few on some damp paper in a warm place to see if they germinate - if so, then most of the packet should be viable. Most seeds are viable for quite a while. Ones that should be sown fresh, though, are carrot, parsley, parsnip and sweet cicely. I've grown good tomatoes from seed over 10 years o...

Re: Nasturtium seed pods - can they be pickled?

They need to be picked when still green and crunchy, not when they're dried and brown - might be obvious, but wasn't to someone I know

Re: Best time to harvest Jerusalem Artichokes?

I dig mine the end of October/beginning of November; keep the best ones back for replanting after Christmas. Don't leave in the soil overwinter or the slugs will get them. I'm growing a pink variety too this year, looking forwward to trying them; I thought I'd lost them last year, but they seem to b...

Re: Chillies in vodka - thanks!

This is a made up recipe, based very loosely on something I found on the net a while back. It's quite potent, and very chilli - hot, so go easy, and drink out of tot glasses. 9 fresh chillies - any type, any colour, any variety; put the chillies into a blender with 1/2 pint or so of warm water and w...

It really was a load of patronising old rubbish; we have since ditched the TV completely from the sitting room, so won't have to endure any more of this sort of carp.

Re: Taking Rosemary cuttings

Up until about the end of the month is a good time now. Tehy dont; need hormone rotting powder or antyhing, as I find they strike easily. I leave mine uncovered in a sheltered place until spring, then divide and plant out/pot up.
Hope this helps.

Lots of whites of both kinds here thsi year, mainly on the buddleias; brassicas unscathed in the main, so far, must prefer the buddleias.

Re: Chillies - Scotch Bonnet, Jalepeno, Fuego & one other!

1.Yes, they will go red on the plant, but you can use them green as well, when they have a fresher more vital taste, in my experience. 2.Best dried, then you can grind them as needed for chilli powder (make sure you keep a grinder just for this, though, don't use the coffee one); you can thread them...
