My rhubarb regularly tries to flower from early in the season. I've already had to remove developing flower spikes a couple of times this year from both Timperley Early, grown from crowns, and from Glaskins Perpetual, originally grown from seed in 2001. The Glaskins has always been very prone to thr...

Who knows? But its worth a bit of potting compost to find out. Sow them in cell trays early August and see what happens. If they germinate plant out to the plot when they are a couple of inches tall, (about 8 weeks or so after sowing),and leave them to overwinter. That way you've lost nothing, and m...

I sow my sweetcorn about 1cm deep in the ubiquitous loo rolls in multi purpose compost. I give them a good soaking from the bottom by putting them in a tray of water until the loo rolls have soaked up the water to their tops and the compost is moist to the top. I find that the loo rolls retain their...

I agree; germinate on damp kitchen paper and once the seeds have germinated transfer to loo rolls filled with potting compost. Grow on until an inch or two tall and plant the loo roll complete into the ground where it will rot down. Tip: I find a bulb planter ideal for making the hole for the loo ro...

How much do you sow? Quantity advice needed

I usually work on the principle of fill the plot with veggies. That gives some for the birds, some for the slugs and the odd one or two left over for me. What doesn't get eaten makes perfectly good compost to put on the plot for next year's over production.

Change of email address

How can I change my forum email address to my new ISP? When I first subscribed to my new ISP I tried to change my forum address unsuccessfully, as the website kept informing me that my (then) username was already registered; (to me!!). When I subsequently tried to re-register under a different usern...

Brassica whitefly

Has anyone found a way to get rid of brassica whitefly? I've tried a method I had seen recommended, namely spraying with a jet of water to dislodge them. All this seems to do is give them some exercise, as they fly around for a couple of minutes, making sure there are no plants they've previously mi...
