Re: Saving Sweet Potato

I've never tried to grow slips so quickly after season ends. I'm waiting until fitst small shoots appear on tubers. That's always at the spring time, February or March. So there's no need to grow them indoors for long time. As soon as first shoots appear on tubers, I move them to light place and put...

Re: Saving Sweet Potato

Rats are irritating, but house martens are even worse. What they don't eat, they will pee on. Smell is terrible

Re: Saving Sweet Potato

It's indeed good way so far, but apparently I have not protected it enouch and I found 5 slugs inside, eating my tubers. They don't attack carrot or potato though. m I am unable to desttoy t...

Re: Saving Sweet Potato

I preffer roasted with olive oil, add some garlic, fresh rosemary, and toasted sunflower seeds + raisins, a bit of salt and hot dried ground chilli pepper. In my opinion purple variety is best for roasting and orange best to boil. Also, leaves can be used as spinach substitute. But I'm not spinach f...

White variety: https://i.imgur.com/0W02RE4.jpg https://i.imgur.com/KZoQrDZ.jpg Planted: June 15 Harvested: October 31 Planted outdoors, slips 10 cm long. The best variety to grow outdoors in cold climate. I'd suggest to try. I've also noticed something inteteresting. If you plant from tuber, old tub...

Re: Saving Sweet Potato

Well, as yours will be grown in tunnel, it will be easier to grow. When growing completly outdoor, any single small mistake causes very poor results when harvesting. Maybe I should buy greenhouse to make my life easier, but satisfaction from success without any greenhouse/tunnel is even bigger Last ...

Re: Saving Sweet Potato

Some people say there's a need to cure them first (2 weeks high temperature and humidity), then eat after 6-8 weeks (not earlier). And keep wrapped each tuber in paper. Some others says there's no any special treatment required, just store similar as potato, put into cotton sack or plastic crate all...

Re: Saving Sweet Potato

How do you store tubers for long time? I keep mine in the dark, 13-15 degree. Oranges and white ones look fine, but purples are soft and withered, especially, smallest ones. It seems purples are not only problematic to lift, but also problematic to keep fresh. I think I'm not going to grow purples n...

Re: Saving Sweet Potato

Definitely white are worth a try. Even if you find them not as tasty as orange. Because they grow much better in temperate climate zone. Btw, purple is more difficult to harvest, because they grow much deeper than orange or white - longer roots and need to dig deeper. Maybe that's the reason of high...

Re: Saving Sweet Potato

Well, flavor is similar. Purple variety is denser and drier than orange and also aroma is different. And you need to cook it longer. White variety is similar to orange, but without aroma specic to regular orange variety. And it's also less sweet and a bit drier too. In my opinion, orange variety has...

Purple: https://i.imgur.com/BSaP2Cq.jpg Orange: https://i.imgur.com/jqeWt3Q.jpg White: https://i.imgur.com/v9Gwyrw.jpg White planted almost 2 months later than purples (at the middle of June, slips directly planted outdoors). White variety grows fastest. Onle one of them harvested, I will let the re...

Re: Saving Sweet Potato

Actually, I think soil temperature was even higher than 35 on sunny days. Unable to stand on it without shoes, as it almost sears foots. Not less than 45-50 degree at the noontime. Of course, it's on the surface, layers located deeper won't be so hot.

Re: Saving Sweet Potato

Ideally not less than 15 at night and 30-35 in direct sunlight. Direct sunlight recommend all day. In temperate climate zone you will never get too high temperature.

Re: Saving Sweet Potato

Direct sunlight and warm soil are required. Otherwise it will always fail.
