The Moneymakers I've grown this year have been OK in terms of yield but it may be my imagination that they don't seem to have had quite the same amount of flavour as previous years. They're grown against a south facing fence and have had as much sunshine as there has been available, but I'm afraid w...

I've picked one tomato today which looks unhappy - unsure whether it's blight or blossom end rot so have sprayed again, although I'm loathe to spray this late in the season, even though rain is threatened. Like Chantal, those tomatoes I picked this morning I've stored in a separate room, having wash...

That's interesting Gracie. I'd just assumed that if the soil was kept sufficiently moist the cardboard would quickly degrade of its own accord. If the loo rolls are sprayed with fungicide, I would have thought that at least it might have protected the roots from attack, although I'd rather garden or...

As I presume you will want to show them with fresh green stalks I imagine you won't want to remove them from the plants. Last week-end I picked a few underripe tomatoes, put them on a tray of newspaper and moved them around the garden to follow the sun and catch a full day of 8 a.m. - 6 p.m.sunshine...

Sowing sweet corn in loo rolls
I've just picked a pretty satisfactory crop from my sweet corn which was sown in two different ways - individually in pots, which were transplanted, and individually in loo rolls filled with compost. Interestingly, the plants sown in pots and transplanted produced bigger cobs than those sown and pla...

I've read in the press that damsons nationally are going to be in very short supply this year and the price, if you can find some, will be exhorbitant. Shame, as I really like to make a batch of damson jam every autumn. Think the same will apply to plums. Johnboy - what a good neighbour you are. Peo...

Just a word of warning for anybody thinking of attaching a water butt to the downpipe of their house guttering. Make sure you know whether the guttering on your eaves runs from Left to Right, or Right to Left. This may seem totally irrelevant but when we installed a water butt at the front of our ho...

Where have all the berries gone?
Our pyracantha bushes this year have barely a berry on them and hawthorn bushes in surrounding lanes seem pretty barren too, despite prolific flowers in spring. Even the nearby elder bushes and trees seem to have few berries on them. Is this the same in other parts of the country? If so, I fear our ...

Yes Colin, this wondrous sight has happened here today as well. I actually also spotted very briefly, a snake-like creature (probably a slow worm) basking in its warm atmosphere on our lawn this morning. However, it rapidly disappeared from sight when I approached and disappeared into our heather bo...

Tumbler tomato leaf dieback
All the leaves on my Tumbler tomatoes have shrivelled and died as the tomatoes started to ripen. As I've never grown this variety before I'm unsure whether this is a common feature or whether I've done something wrong. The tomatoes are fine and the compost has been kept moist.
