Re: Captain Horatio Pugwash
They were fine little stories (on a par with Noggin the Nog, the creator of those didn't die too long ago either) but who invented these characters that were never in the stories but everybody remembers? Re: Runner Beans not setting
I'm a born sceptic - accepted wisdom rarely washes with me - I have to prove or observe it for myself.

Re: Broom Cuttings
I'm not in tropical Devon - not much of any day gets to 72 and night time is nearer 52 so even in my shed the heat is often on.

Re: My cucumbers
Sounds like Melothrie to me (info from Real Seeds) We are pleased to be able to offer another unusual cucumber relative that is quite easy to grow, especially up some netting in a polytunnel. The plants are quite compact so you don't use much more than a couple of feet of tunnel space, and you'll ge...

Re: Runner Beans not setting
Interesting observation. It has often been said that white and variegated flowered beans set better than the normal ones, is this the reason? Perhaps we could compile a list; what variety are you growing, are the bees visiting them normally or taking them from behind? To follow up Alan's post, is an...

Re: Runner Beans not setting
Thanks. If you right click the picture you can select "Save Image As" - I nick a lot of pictures off the Internet that way. Alternatively, if you pm me your email address I'll send you the original off the camera which should print better than this one as I reduced the file size for the fo...

Runner Beans not setting
There have often been discussions here about problems with Runner Beans not setting reliably and I have always said I have never had this problem. I've always put it down to good trench preparation plus a high insect population with my parallel rows of Sweet Peas, Broad Beans and Runner Beans. Well ...

Re: Murphys liquid copper fungicide
It looks like nobody's got an old bottle. I think it is the same stuff as Bordeaux mixture which is a powder that you mix at 35 grams in 1½ litres so if you can read the bit of the label that tells you the active content you might be able to work it out.

Re: Anybody spraying against tomato blight?
I decided to spray this morning as it might be fine for 24 hours and I found an odd dodgy leaf on Charlotte.

Re: Broom Cuttings
I took them on 7th July. Perhaps the year I was successful I was a little later. On reflection it is possible I didn't use heat, I don't always but use the propagator as an easy way of creating a close atmosphere, I shade it with white polythene . Everything else is looking good, some with roots out...

Broom Cuttings
Not veg I know. This time of year I take loads of shrub cuttings but the one I regularly fail with is Broom. One year I got 9/10 but most years I get 0 and true to form this year's batch are the only sorry sight in the propagator. I took a mixture of heel and straight cuttings, put them in the usual...

Re: Contaminated Manure
Petition duly signed. I suspect this battle is going to be lost I think the future could well tell us that the reinstatement of this chemical was a mistake. The proposed stewardship scheme is clearly nonsense and totally unenforceable for any significant period. I would be surprised if any farmer kn...
