Removal of topic
May I suggest to the moderator that the 'seriously irked' topic be removed from both forums as it is not about gardening or related subjects and merely 'irking' people still more. There will always be dissent and discontent, but that is not the way to deal with it. Spring is coming. Let's concentrat...

Calm down Jenny, they're only vegetables! As Ali has indirectly pointed out, calories are not the only thing that matters. I would be interested to hear practical suggestions as to how one would grow a balanced vegetarian diet in this country. What would it consist of and how many months of the year...

Hi Angie. Not attacking anyone, just describing things as I find them. 'Vegetarians' because many of these eat fish or even white meat. And 'she' because to quote from a google search 'Studies women as the ratio of female to male vegetarians is 2:1' and ' Food factors appeared to be less distinctive...

I think the importance of a balanced diet cannot be over-emphasised. Certainly my experience of 'vegetarians' - and I have and do meet many - is that too often it is an emotional thing which involves avoiding meat and, less often, dairy products. Indeed, although I am far from being a vegetarian, I ...

Potatoes in pots
Hi Mr Potato Head! Yes - Feb's KG issue is certainly interesting regarding potatoes in pots. Basically he is using a variation on that used with Tomatoes in Greenhouses where you have a double root system in trenches, watering in one and feeding in the other. What I would like to know is, what kind ...

Yes - seeds that convert elements would be wondrous indeed! I think there is possibly confusion over plants preferential accumulating chemicals like Arsenic (possibly useful in Bangladesh) and Gold (not sufficient to make you a millionaire!). Regarding Trace elements, their presence in plants does n...

Tropical Ruby
Just finished eating the last tomatoes from Tropical Ruby. Previously grown outdoors but this year I had a greenhouse. They were put in late having been grown in pots under one of these plastic affairs and were a bit lanky. Grown on in larger pots they recovered. Despite being a small tomato they ha...

Why is noone speaking to me!?
Come on chaps and chapesses, surely someone knows something about growing potatoes in exhibitor growbags! Is this a foolproof weigh of defeating slugs? Is the yield worthwhile or is it just a way of getting a few spuds to exhibit? Or maybe it is just a pain in the proverbial?

Potato Growbags
Re the Jan 2006 KG offer of 10x6 potatoes plus 60 growbags. Has anyone any experience of these growbags? Do you just dig a hole and put them where you would normally plant your potatoes? Are there any problems watering, etc.? Is this a good way of keeping them slug-free?

More on plant testing
In this week's New Scientist the Editor, in response to comments on the testing of GM crops has made the point about the need to also test conventionally-bred plants in the same way citing problems with potatoes, celery and parsnips. And looking at all the new varieties that appear each year in the ...
