Hello Happymouse I have a Honda FG200 which is similar to the Mantis. Its a great machine and I wouldn't be without it. I got it rather than a Mantis because it has a 4-stroke engine (Mantis has a two-stroke) so there's no fuel mixing needed, no smelly exhaust, always starts first time, is smooth an...

This has been an excellent thread. Many thanks to Carole for getting it started. I like to try different flour mixes and would recommend these three for some different loaves. Using your recipe and method for a basic white loaf (a good quality bread flour needed), substitute: — 1/3 of the flour with...

Hello Mark Trying to get a jam made with low pectin fruit to set properly can be a real pain. Its a matter of getting the sugar/pectin/acidity balance right. I think part of your problem might have been that you added the pectin and lemon after your first attempt at setting. These are best added at ...

This pest is becoming a real problem now. It seems to be worse in some years. I grow my leeks under environmesh and this has worked well. As there's not so much space when growing under mesh I grow them close together as finger-sized leeks. I seem to remember that on the old forum Beryl (from Saunde...

Hello Tony I think woodchips decompose so slowly that any nitrogen depletion would be minimal. Anyway the depletion is only temporary as decomposition proceeds the N eventually becomes available again. As far as raspberries go its surely too early to think about mulching them. Why not give them a go...

Hello All Wholemeal loaves can be a bit on the heavy side as Tigger says. I usually use 70% or 50% etrong wholemeal flour and the rest is strong white flour. The instruction book for my machine (Panasonic) suggests using 1/4 tsp of vit C powder as a flour enhancer with the 100% and 70% wholemeal loa...

Hello Gill That sounds like a good idea! Can you let us have your method please. I use the dough programme on my machine for making rolls and this works well. I split the dough from 500g of strong flour into 12 equal portions (70g each) and roll to a ball and place them approx 3in apart on a baking ...

Hello Brian Is a Jalo a push along hoe with a wheel at the front? You could try googling for 'wheel hoe' - this throws up quite a lot of results. It seems they are still made in Switzerland and the US for use mainly by organic gardeners. I was given one of these by a friend last year and intend to r...

Hello Carole Welcome to the fantastic world of breadmaking! Using these machine is not quite like following a cake recipe where a bit of this and a guessed amount of that will still get you a good result in the end. These machines can be rather unforgiving. So here are a few tips which I hope will h...

Neither did the original KG forum. This early forum, despite its technical shortcomings, was an absolute treasure trov...

Hello Sue Don't panic! Rain water is often acidic so for the purest water I would use stuff from thawing out ice from the freezer - this is in effect distilled water. Where did you get your soil samples from? When sampling your soil avoid the surface layers as these may give you a false reading, ins...
