Re: Non peat based composts
Thanks for the interesting read Johnboy. "My view is also the heat that the heaps create to make the standard compost (with or without added wood & bits), devoid of living micro organisms essential to plant growth where our garden soil is rich with these & along with worms & stuff.&...

Re: Tasty Garlic
Update a year latter. Have had good size bulbs from raised bed and small bulb from those grown in pot. Cant say I am impressed with the taste or smell though. Put all garlic in shed to dry off and looked forward to being hit with strong smell when opening door next day, didn't happen. Been cooking a...

Re: Non peat based composts
How important is peat?
We hear a lot about seeds not growing and blame lack of peat which makes me wonder was there peat in seed beds in the older days?

Re: Non peat based composts
I have no idea if using without peat has any effect on growing yields or failures, Most of my compost (hot) is home made 5 off pallet size squares, 1 water butt size. I have brought 1 builders size bag of mushroom compost and 15 off (75lt) clover compost which states includes peat from Ireland. I do...

Re: Water pump
There is a Bosch Cordless Water pump system, bit pricy but if you already have other 18v items could be interesting.

Re: Water pump
I to use a bilge pump with 12volt battery attached to garden hose, great for shifting water from the water butt around the plot.
When water butts are dry use a black plastic dustbin on wheelbarrow to transfer water from tap to plot.

Watering
Out with the dog looking at newly ploughed/planted fields and wondered how they get away without watering newly planted seeds/plants. Seems the experts say give your new seeds/plants a good watering when first planted. When planting last week I noticed tops of the beds are dry but further done very ...

"vroom vroom noisy motor cars "
Will Electric cars put a stop to that?
Could the future be all electric lawn mowers/rotavators?
I am fortunate as the only noise I hear on plot are the birds, radio and occasional lawn mower and very rarely a motivator.

Not enough it seems as when I start potting up the seeds I have loads but as the day progresses I run out of the size I want.

Re: Early Spring Bits and Bobs
Whilst walking the dog found a baby deer curled up in hedge seemed to be abandoned, checked latter in the day and was still there. After talking with local lady about it decided best to collect it and she would feed it, on going back to collect it found the mother was nearby and the fawn was on it's...
