Re: Summer Bits and Bobs

Well, I now have a lovely vase of sunflowers and dahlias - found broken off in the garden, due to the horrendous winds. But at least the power stayed on.

Re: Summer Bits and Bobs

Well, all the tall sunflowers and hollyhocks are now tied to various structures - so I hope they survive. I've picked all the large dahlia blooms - some were as big as a dinner plate. Didn't think they'd survive the impending gales. Still awaiting the arrival of courgettes on my climbing courgette p...

Re: Butterflies and Moths - again

I've only seen cabbage whites in the garden this year in spite of planting lots of butterfly loving flowers. Mint moths are decimating my various mint plants, all except for the strawberry mint.

Re: Bush Tomatoes

My bush tomatoes (Salt Spring Sunrise) has gone absolutely beserk in the greenhouse this year. It's overtaken my usual favourite (Gardeners Delight). I've trimmed off quite a few lower leaves but there are so many that I have to walk sideways once inside the greenhouse.

And perhaps a shaded area where you could sit when it's too hot to garden.

Re: Non alcoholic bottles

If you look on You Tube and find "How to make lavender bottles" there are several tutorials. I use 7 stems but you could use more as long as it's an odd number. Make them before the stems on the plants get too brittle. And watch out for the bees! They're quite easy. When the scent fades th...

Non alcoholic bottles

It was too hot to do any gardening the other day so I picked some lavender (had to do some negotiations with the bees about this!)..and made lavender bottles.

Re: Beetroot surprise

My beetroot crop is looking awful this year. Boltardy - usually grows really well. I have brown patches all over the leaves this year. Haven't done anything different. I'm definitely going to try Moles F1 Pablo next year.

That's why I like Beechgrove Gardens - it's more realistic. They have failures...and they show them.

Re: Mid Summer Bits and Bobs.

It's raining at last. I'm in the same boat as Westi - parched earth - wilting plants - no raspberries at all and the rhubarb is like concrete.

Just in time to revive the garden before the approaching heatwave again.

Re: 2019 begins

What wonderful pictures of healthy plants. I'm still awaiting the ripening of the first tomato (in the greenhouse). The raspberries didn't produce any fruit this year. However, sweetcorn is looking good. I think I'll plant more next year and cut down on the kale, seeing as it's only me (and a friend...
