Re: Spring proper, 2022, Bits and Bobs.

Three days well spent, Peter, but what will you do with 300 onions?

It's been rather miserable up here to today - the greenhouse heater (which kicks in when the temperature goes down to 15C) was on all day. Flaming June?

Re: Poor plant Growth after Green Manures?

I use green manures every year, but tend to stick to single varieties like grazing rye or phacelia, so have no experience with 'winter mix'. It might have been better to leave a longer gap between digging the green manure and planting so that the plants have completely rotted down. Also (and I don't...

Re: I am back ....

Thank you, OH. We have not seen it ourselves, not having a TV, but my daughters have recorded it and we will see it soon. One daughter, Rob's mum, said he came across very well and hoped that it might have helped others in a similar situation.

I don't know if any of you watched Professor Hannah Fry last night on BBC2 in her programme 'Making Sense of Cancer'. If you did, the last patient featured was our grandson Rob ........

Re: Spring proper, 2022, Bits and Bobs.

We too had some short hefty showers today, but really do need more. The large pond in our village nature reserve is at the lowest level I have ever seen it at this time of the year.

Re: Spring proper, 2022, Bits and Bobs.

Looking great, Geoff. Our Estima potatoes are flowering, so I might have a little proddle around in the large pot. They were started in the greenhouse but have been outside now for more than a month.

Re: Lost my mojo

Hello, Catherine, nice to hear from you again but I am so sorry to hear about your daughter and can imagine how that hit you hard. Do give your gardening another go this year - it will give you something to look forward to, even if you lose some to pests and other baddies. And do keep joining in thi...

Re: Spring proper, 2022, Bits and Bobs.

Not been brilliant the last three days either: lovely wall-to-wall sunshine but a horrendous NW wind which is battering everything. The broad beans which are now about 3 feet high and well supported, are being viciously pulled to pieces (and are the insects able to fly in this wind and pollinate the...

Do you know, I have been racking my brain to think of something I really hate (life is too short to spend much time on hating), but I have come up with something: dropping litter and leaving dog poo ......

Re: Spring proper, 2022, Bits and Bobs.

Shallot Man, no longer having an allotment either, I really appreciate growing some vegetables in the garden at home (nothing like the space we had on the allotment) because it's so much easier just to pop out for 20 minutes to do some weeding whilst the potatoes boil for lunch, rather than having t...

Re: Spring proper, 2022, Bits and Bobs.

All the vegetable beds are filled now, planted the dwarf beans a few days ago but they are still under a netting tunnel, not least to stop the blackbirds digging them up again! The broad beans are full of flowers - I just hope the insects do their bit of pollinating. It's very sunny here but also ve...

Re: Spring proper, 2022, Bits and Bobs.

Right, here it goes, Shallot Man: 11.5mm = 0.4527599 inches
Since then it's rained a bit more and we now have 20mm in the rain gauge, or 0.787401 inches
Will that do?

Re: Spring proper, 2022, Bits and Bobs.

Oh, you lucky thing, Westi - I don't mean the getting wet - at least you have had RAIN! Everything is so so dry here. I planted the dwarf beans yesterday and the soil was bone dry before I gave them a good soaking. The forecast IS for rain, but I'll believe it when I see/hear/feel it!
