Re: What is "well rotted" manure?

"I am trying Charles Dowding's no dig method. I was planning on covering the last weedy part of my allotment with horse muck (I can get plenty of not fresh but not fully rotted muck), covering this with a layer of cardboard and leaving it until the spring when I will start growing in it. Is thi...

Re: Insulating compost bin

Another thought on pallet verses darlek.

There are gaps in pallets but not in the darlek as compost needs air could this be reason darlek does not get hot.

Re: Insulating compost bin

What about lining the inside with cardboard?

Since moving to pallet type compost bins the temp has been around 60/70 active/hot where as the darlek type got hot for a few days then dropped off.

Re: cheese

When I get down to the parmesan rind I slice as much off and share it with the dog when I cannot get any more cheese off it I give it to the the dog.

Many a time I have taken cheese out of fridge to find it has gone green, still eat it though.

Re: Autumn bits and bobs

Spent a lovely day on the plot enjoying the sunshine whilst putting up new gate posts and getting stung by red ants.

Re: Starting a no-dig kitchen garden from scratch

Fully agree Stephen. I have been using the plastic dalek type but no very impressed, have just built two pallet size composting bays which are working great 60/70 degrees, looking to have 6 bays eventually. I have neighbours saving me their cardboard/pruning/food waste etc plus having access to free...

Re: Decision made!

Would a table tie be a better alternative to clue & drilling especially as you are going to be moving it. Your mention of rotation is something I am concerned with as ideally I would not want to keep moving it although as I use the no dig system perhaps that is not a major issue On a side note t...

Re: Decision made!

I'm thinking nut & bolt either where dot is or the arrow or both that way it can be dismantled easily.

As for the netting I can see a way of using the larger hole to make it more stable.

The size of my additional plot is 7 metre x 12.5 metres so wondering what size is you have Westi?

"There are these round clips you pop the tubes in"

Is this the part you are referring to Westi?

Re: Decision made!

Thanks Westi, I see the netting is the type used scaffolding do the big holes let in the unwanted bugs?

Re: Decision made!

Wonder if the wonderwall turned out a good investment.
I have opportunity to add to my plot which would suite a wonderwall, so looking into them.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Re: Your (meanest)/most economical gardening habits

Been known to collect card board off skips or put out for collecting always ask first though.

Have neighbours that give/save me their card board, tea bags, food scrapes, grass trimmings & hedge/tree cuttings.
