Re: Festive yet?

Monika Hope the weather is good for your Christmas veg harvesting on Christmas Eve, we didn't have any rain down here today so got ours done this afternoon. As Mrs Snip is slightly incapacitated at present I got out reasonably early to do some normal shopping today, drove straight in and parked no p...

Re: Compost accelerator

Used to use Garotta but perhaps we are just fortunate in the current siting of our 7 heaps, on both plot and in garden, as they rot down quite well without it. Agree with Alan though. I apply urine now and again usually at start of new season once the weather has got past the cold potential frost st...

Re: Burning Issues of the Day

Sunday 21st Dec

Cloudy looking start to the day.

Wondering if I should get up the plot early to dig the Christmas dinner veggies or leave it another day or two so they are fresher on the day

Re: Festive yet?

Oldherbaceous that sounds idyllic. It is very much the way I have been trying to get back to as well for a few years now, unfortunately those around me are still embroiled with the hyped up style of a commercial Christmas.

I bet you'll have chestnuts roasted on an open fire as well

Re: Burning Issues of the Day

Hi Elaine Housework & iron, Hmm why do today what can be put off until tomorrow. If your heart isn't in doing the ironing concentration might lapse and result in a definite burning issue Read the book whilst waiting at the hairdressers Stay on the lappy, that way we might get to enjoy some more ...

hi Oldherbaceous

I like your thinking :)

Diane
Now that raises another burning issue,

Will my remaining stock of home made marmalade see me through until the new seasons Seville oranges arrive in the shops.

Burning Issues of the Day

Those things that you wonder if you should do, or if something will happen. Such as Will my onion seed order arrive before Christmas so that, for the first time ever, I can try sowing Kelsae onions on Boxing day. Will my car battery accept a charge so that I can get the car started or will I have to...

Re: 2014 Slug Invasion

Interesting observation there MW, thanks. I tend to have associated wood more with woodlice than slugs I have to admit. When we took over this plot in 2012 it was the archetypal overgrown jungle that so many plots are allowed to become before being re-let. That year I dug it over by hand, removing a...

Re: 2014 Slug Invasion

hi Robo Hydrated Lime has the highest Neutralising Value of commonly available lime types, much less is required to alter Ph values of the soil and it may well prove to be an irritant to the handler so care is needed on both counts. I can't say for sure but I would have thought the level of applicat...

Re: peas

Amongst the types we grow I have to admit to swearing by Alderman (aka Telephone) for a few years now. A good old fashioned tall pea variety (about 6ft) This year we had a 20ft double run of them. Agreed they can become like bullets if left too long before picking but we don't give them the chance t...

Re: 2014 Slug Invasion

Plumpudding Your post caused a sharp intake of breath and an admiration for your tenacity. 1700 in one night !! wow. No wonder it seems like an uphill battle to me. Good to hear you are thinking of the Thrushes and Hedgehogs though, they both need all the help they can get. Despite my best efforts t...

Re: 2014 Slug Invasion

Thanks for the replies Robo and Ricard (not forgetting the H) Sounds disappointing Robo, I wonder why the lack of success. Not as if the product I am thinking of hasn't been around a few years so some must have had some success with it otherwise it would be long gone off the market I would have thou...
