Re: Newbie Spanish plot photos.

Ah of course! Sounds perfect for your climate there. It has suddenly dropped 10C today with quite a brisk chilly wind so back to business as usual here and my sun-loving veggies such as sweetcorn, tomatoes and squashes are looking confused and a bit disappointed - but I feel much better for it!

Re: The Giant Marrow Topic!

Thought you might like to see my effort so far in the giant marrow comp. Well actually this is my second attempt as Mervin as I have called him ended up being harvested accidentally and went in to a rather nice courgette, lime and coriander side dish! This is Mervin 2 and he is about 10in long as I ...

Re: Newbie Spanish plot photos.

Very jealous! Must have been sooo hot in your tunnels lately. Mine reached 106F recently. What variety of tomato is that?

Re: Early Summer bits and bobs - 2017

I had a disaster with courgettes last year, but pleased to say they are doing well now - the polytunnel is helping! I'm trying 'Piccolo' among others. V nice! Bought Mrs Carrot a spiraliser yesterday so will be trying courgetti tonight for the first time.

Re: Definition of quick growing

My first harvest of 'spring onions' this year has come from my overwintered pots of 'Senshyu Yellow' and a few other varieties. I borrow Joe Maiden's old trick of planting the sets quite thickly in pots in autumn, then thinning from early April onwards, leaving the rest to mature to full size. Had s...

Re: Definition of quick growing

Hi folks, sorry for the slow response. If you are comparing spring onions to other salads like radishes and salad leaves then it might seem to be stretching it a bit to call them quick-growing, but they are certainly not the slowest. I have sown some in a tray and others in the ground in the polytun...

Re: Parky this morning

I mentioned the apple blossom above. My trees do seem to be full of bloom this year. Just hoping the frost won't spoil it. The pear had just finished though, so that's OK. By the way. I can't get any of my pictures to show the right way up! I haven't moved to Australia - just don't have the technica...

Parky this morning

My seedlings were shivering and I had to spray the apple blossom this morning because of the frost here in the E Midlands. Was it the same for you? Beautiful morning now though.

Re: Compost additives

I've also got a worm bin for kitchen scraps and it works brilliantly....except. I've learned that it is pointless putting uncrushed eggshells into it. Obvious I suppose that the poor old worms might struggle with those, but no matter how long you leave them in the bin, they will always come out look...

Compost additives

So I was doing a bit of gardening this morning before work and emptying a compost bin. Near the top I found two big bits of clay pot and a nearly new hand fork (nearly new when it went in anyway)! My other half uses a trug when she is pottering around weeding etc and often drops tools etc into it. I...

Re: Bramblings, siskins .....

Wonderful picture Tigerburnie! I've only ever seen one kingfisher - at least one that wasn't just a blue flash out of the corner of my eye. Think I saw my first Marsh Tit mixed in with a little flock of Yellowhammers at the weekend, but not very good at identifying little birds. Sparrow-sized with b...

Polytunnel fever

Made a big decision over the weekend. My little 6x8ft polytunnel that I've had for 20 years in a couple of gardens needs recladding and the doorframes are rotten, so I've decided to invest in a 20x8 (which is about all I have room for - or at least all the space I'm allowed y my other half! ). Actua...

Re: Bramblings, siskins .....

Saw my first ever goldcrest yesterday. Such a tiny bird, but so busy! Wonder how such a tiny thing can survive the winter cold while I'm huddled around a radiator! Not such a great view as you though Geoff. Your pics are amazing!
