Mistletoe

Hi Jude,
Mistletoe will grow on a great many different trees. I have it on Apple, Pear, Ash,Hawthorn, Poplar and on some types of Willow but certainly Salix Alba to name but a few.

Hi Piglet, Tomatoes technically should never be allowed to be subjected to less than 10C and unless you have heating in your new Polytunnel it is probably going to be May before there is sufficient heat. I know a lot of people grow Toms at a lower temerature but they run the risk of truss variations...

Mistletoe

I am about to take a limb off an enormous Apple tree and there are two very large bunches of Mistletoe on it. These are full of Berries and they are ripe at this time of the year. Because, due to frost I had no fruit whatsoever last year and I normally have a very large flock of Fieldfares that eat ...

Hi Chez,
Would these be Pot Marigold or Tageties that you planted. I plant Pot Marigold around and the Blackfly loooove them and also Nasturtiums which have the same effect. Some people use Tageties which to me do not seem to have the lure of the others.

Hi Beccy, Oh how I agree with your last sentence!! I suppose that this is what is so wonderful about growing. I agree with you that if your 3 year old Manure were to be riddled prior to distribution it would be even better but, and there is always a but, the trouble is that the vast majority of gard...

Potato Haulm.

Hi Colin, Large quantities of Nadine are grown locally and although the rows are 36" apart they always seem to completely cover the ground between rows so I would think that would mean that they are Large Haulmed. Strangely although Nadine is a Second Early they are sown as a Main Crop hereabouts

Frosted Potatoes.

Hi Bigpepper,
Potatoes that have been damaged by frost generally
deteriorate quite rapidly so you should know for sure quite soon.
If they are continuing to 'chit' they should he perfectly ok.
Fingers crossed for you!

Old Wives Tale

Hi Sue, It has been my experience over the years that the stronger the root system prior to planting out the stronger the plant. I have been growing Brassicas in Modules ever since modules were invented and I can assure you that your neighbour is totally wrong in his thinking. As is previously menti...

Att Beccy

Hi Beccy, I hate to disappoint you but it is not a myth that manuring a carrot bed will produce forking. Carrots need nutrients but if you dig in manure and a Carrot main root manages to hit a clod of manure on its path downwards then it splits into two or maybe even more roots and Stones will produ...

Shallots

Hi Fen, Generally speaking if last years Shallots are sound there is not a not wrong with them. This is of course not foolproof but very close. I had a strain of Shallots for many many years and one year they simply shrivelled and died. By now any real difficulties would have shown up and I would sa...

Well here's a strange thing!

Hi Fen, I have just read your posting and the advice I have been lead to beleive with Mustard is that young Wireworms cannot resist it and gorge themselves and burst. So which is it to be?? Me thinks a case of suck it and see!! Strange two completely opposite points of view. I hastern to add that I ...

The Magazine

Hi Mr PH, Locally there are four on order and it was through my cajoling that the other 8 copies got brought onto the shelf. As I say this is a very rural area and to sell this amount is doing exceedingly well. I can assure you that THE magazine is displacing all the others. I will not mention any b...
