Re: early Peas

My allotment neighbour had to free a pigeon from my pea cage yesterday. The cage is a bit rough and ready but thought it would have kept them out.... but no... it found a way.

Fingers crossed the damage was just superficial and they will grow new shoots.

Re: Pa Snip Enterprise, Do you know your onions ?

Hi, I grow shallots and spring onions but don't bother with onions anymore. We cook with onions a lot so can't grow enough in the space we currently have to be self sufficient. I will one day but only varieties whch differ massively from the shops. When I have, always from sets. Never overly impress...

Re: Top tips to start seed off

Hi, Friday morning question time....... So, I have a few trays of potted on seedlings (which I grew from seed). Fennel, lettuce and celery. They are all quite small still (few centimetres). I water regularly and they are in the sun, but I can't help thinking growth is very slow this year. I.m gettin...

Re: Pa Snip Enterprise, Do you know your onions ?

Hi, Your neighbours sounds a bit like onion rot. If it is, he's doing the best thing. I had it a couple of years ago - lost all my garlic. I can't grow onions/ garlic in that part of the plot now, and where I do is in the knowledge I could loose them all. I believe it spreads in the soil, not the ai...

Re: Sweetcorn problems

Thanks all. Compost was a well known brand, no extra feed given. Could be overwatering, but I was very careful not to because of the problems with damping off. Just a sprinkle when dry. They grew quite quickly in a short time, but not much growth now. They are outside so will see and update. If I se...

Re: Spring onion regrowing

Hi, I think you can grow lemon grass like this as well - if you have some left over, either put in water or soil, and it should root. I grow it because the cats love the stuff. I've just put a sprinkling of spring onion seed down the lotty - I wonder what the speed differences are to get the same si...

Re: Sweetcorn problems

Hi, Thanks for the advice. Tried not to over water because of the problems I've had with damping off this year, and lessons learnt. I Would be surprised if they were potbound, as the seedlings are only a couple of weeks old. Also in root trainers... but you never know. Maybe I'll open one and see. I...

Sweetcorn problems

Hi, After some advice please. The first sowing of 'lark' resulted in poor germination. There's still a few which are kept in reserve. I sowed some more a few weeks ago 'swift' in rootrainers in the window. After a promising start - good germination, the centres appear to be rotting/ wilting turning ...

Re: Top tips to start seed off

I had given up on a couple of trays of lettuce seed and left them out on the side before discarding - you can guess what's happened! Obviously just not the right conditions and had stayed dormant. Strange isn't it. I sowed some lettuce seeds into a trug thing we keep in the garden for easy access ba...

Re: Recipes for elderflower cordial

Hi,

I've emailed the recipes to my mum in law who was very grateful - thank you again. I'll let you know how it turns out. If I can get 20 heads today, I might also make some for home.

Re: A view of my garden

We've had some pretty fierce storms - hale storm yesterday! All my plants in tha back garden took a right battering. A couple of my rather tall and leggy tomatillos got snapped in two - but I'm hoping that these will develop branches - just like pinching out. Maybe.... With the help of mr Pawty I'm ...

Re: Recipes for elderflower cordial

That's great, thank you.

I've made elderflower fizz before and it was delicious, but need a non alcoholic version this time.

I love elderflower - makes a great sorbet. Really got into cordial as a refreshing drink. Really makes you feel summery.

Re: Top tips to start seed off

Hi, So, what a difference a week made! Re started courgettes, sweetcorn and squash in the windowsill. I would say 95% success on germination. the differences - - all were in a west facing upstairs windowsill (previously in east facing) - all were new seed - the one courgette which didn't germinate w...
