For one person I would use about two handfuls of prepared veg. For root veg, peel if you want and cut into chunks, about 2cm square. Pop in a dish, drizzle on about 1tbs olive oil, salt and pepper and a sprinkling of fresh or dried herbs. I like thyme or rosemary with roots. Bake at mk7 for 40 ish m...

I always start mine off in three inch pots and plant out when about 2-3 inches high, with bottle cloche protection.

Celeriac isn't very keen on being transplanted. This may be why they've done this, although I'm surprised they didn't bolt instead. Daft question I know, but are you absolutely sure they were celeriac seedlings?

I'm sure this isn't the best way to do it, but its what we did with our plum tree. We moved it in February, two years ago, and basically just dug it up, having prepared a new planting hole elsewhere. We firmed it in well and occassionally watered it for a couple of months. The first year it didn't f...

I have some scaffolders netting that I use over brassicas. It is fine as long as you sew up the gaps that appear in a line every metre or so along its length.

Thanks so much, Beryl, Emma and Chantal. I will try sliced and whole. Do you think it'd work with very small (2-3" long) cucumbers?

Gherkins

My daughter loves pickled gherkins, so as a very special treat for her I am growing gherkins this year. Unfortunately, we're not big pickle eaters as a rule, and the last thing I'd do to most of my veg is steep it in vinegar. Having attempted to pickle some baby cucumbers only to have them turn a ho...

You should get in touch with English Heritage. They have an archaeology team based in Portsmouth. I used to work there. They are having two open days in a couple of weekend's time. Their address is: Centre for Archaeology, Fort Cumberland, Fort Cumberland Road, Eastney, Portsmouth, Hants.

Call me an old grump, but I can't believe you let your kids do that! What if you frightened someone with a weak heart or poor balance? It also seems irresponsible to encourage throwing things out of car windows. I certainly wasn't a saint as a child, but I never played pranks with my parents' consent.

We drove from Portsmouth to Inverness a few years ago (niece's wedding). We stopped in the Lake District. I can't remember exactly where, just a little camp site up a hill! It was fabulous. Waking up at 5am next to a stream, fantastic views.

Oh its sad you're not enjoying it. I think its aimed at families, ie adults and children. So sorry you don't like Bill Oddie. I think he's quite sweet, like a dotty old uncle, and he does come up with some really good info. Mind you I was a great fan of the Goodies as a child, so I have a soft spot ...

They're not as difficult to grow as you might imagine. If you think tender squash you'll be ok. I have grown them in a cold frame and on top of a compost bin with good results. Having said that I've lost all of mine to slugs this year!

What a good idea! I would never have thought of that. So easy and such a good way to recycle old foil. I will definitely give that a try.

Metals as slug barriers

On GW, Monty Don used copper pipe screwed to a raised bed plus nematodes in the bed to keep it slug and snail free. Brilliant idea, I thought, until I realised how much copper pipe cost. Now I know I could look in skips for old pipe, but I doubt it shows up that often, so I started to wonder if othe...
