I usually use time rather than effort on tree stumps. I mainly use a trowel (after shifting the easy stuff with a spade), loppers and bowsaw. Work round finding roots and cut out at least a 6" piece with appropriate tool according to diameter, creating gaps like this makes it easier to rock the...

What you need to do is sneak up when he is engrossed in his pigeon loft and use so good binder twine to tie his car to his loft. Idea comes from camping 40 years ago. We were perhaps not as quiet as we might have been when we came back from the pub. The big frame tent camper nearby came to remonstra...

I've never thought about shallots from seed, is there another thread that discusses them?
The only one in my new Wallis catalogue that has just arrived is Ambition F1 at £1.85 for 100 seeds, is that typical of what you find?
What is the timing - similar to onions, a fairly early start in heat?

My Charlottes did exactly that, I think it is just end of life. There were no mushy stems or horrible smell. I dug all mine and there were no damaged tubers either. As I was convinced there was no blight I have composted the tops with some comfrey and grass clippings and they are getting well cooked...

Bit bothered about this bit of the link : "By digging the soil you will encourage much more rapid breakdown of organic matter. Thus, if you wish to maintain the soil fertility, you will become locked into a vicious circle of having to obtain more organic matter to feed the soil whilst putting i...
