Re: How would I check soil for contamination?

Hi Stephen You best bet is to contact Environmental Health at your local council and explain your concerns. This is not the same as the Environment Agency. Try to arrange a site visit with one of their officers. They will advise you on what sort of tests for contaminants need to be carried out and a...

Re: Please help with some plant identification

Hello Stephen I think that the second plant is common hogweed but it is difficult to tell without seeing the leaves. This can grow to 1 to 2m high and looks like a coarser version of cow parsley. It is quite easy to confuse it with giant hogweed which is toxic - even touching this might cause a seve...

Re: Please can we have some more 'funnies'?

The Washington Post's Mensa Invitational once again invited readers to take any word from the dictionary, alter it by adding, subtracting, or changing one letter, and supply a new definition. Here are the winners: 1. Cashtration (n.): The act of buying a house, which renders the subject financially ...

Re: Broadforks

Hi Pa Snip
This looks rather like a tarmac fork and not a potato fork. Must be difficult to dig with as I guess its designed more for shoveling.

Re: Red Currant Straining Problems

Hello PC98 The problem may be with your recipe. I cup of water to 4lb fruit isn't enough. There don't seem to be any rules on the ratio of fruit to water with jellies but I simply put the fruit into a pan and just add enough liquid to barely cover the fruit then boil to a pulp. As for the cloudy res...

Re: Controversial diet matters.

Has anyone tried the Scottish Diet? Scotland, a beautiful small European country, is blissfully free of ageing populations. The Scots die young and don't cling on their pensions for decades. What's their secret? The Scottish Diet, an age-old combination low in fresh fruits and vegetables and high in...

Re: Moths - lack of

Hi Colin
Very few moths here as well.
Also a noticeable lack of butterflies. This is surprising considering the relatively mild winter and spring we have just had.
