Re: Aspirins against blight?

I. might give this a try too but since I"m a feet & inches person can somebody please explain to me how many aspirin tablets this amount represents. Well, it looks like you're in good company with the University of Rhode Island: 500mg in 1 gallon? Not so much avoirdupois as sois-disant .

Re: Any experts on geraniums?

Over-wintered geraniums do tend to start the season let's say, not necessarily on the right foot. It's not unusual for them to look rather ropey by the time it comes to plant them out for the summer. They're quick to recover, so given a bit of summer sun they soon get a wiggle on and any discolourat...

Re: Are we in the right job?

I am in the right job, but the survey was wide of the mark. I'm good at maths, apparently. Not so that me, nor anyone else, would notice.

Re: Mushrooms

I've grown them from a pre-prepared kit and they were successful and easy. I bought it mail order, which ensured that the kit was freshly prepared and ready to go, which is important as I'm inclined to think that kits which are seen for sale in gardening centres are likely a little past their prime,...

Re: Can I have help with flowers ?

It looks like I'm going to have to re-pot them in singles, I can see what you mean about them being a robust plant. Already, they are robust and only 4 inches tall. I may even pull them apart before they root-together and plant them out even though we could still get a cold-snap. I have so many pla...

Re: Can I have help with flowers ?

Cosmos is tall but is sufficiently robust to withstand most situations without support. But you'll only get robust growth if they're not overcrowded and really I don't recommend growing them in multiples, and the 2 feet spacing is about right. You get a lot of bang for your buck with Cosmos and you'...

Re: Outdoor Cucumber

There are many different factors in play here. It might be that conditions weren't quite warm enough. We had a hot summer last year but I remember May being pretty tepid. It might also be that your plants may have had a bit of a check in growth before they were planted out (they may have stayed in t...

Re: When is my Broccoli ready?

Is it just a duffer? A duffer, yes, but that's no bad thing. The way I see it, it may crop much later than the others, extending the cropping period. Many recent broccoli varieties are more uniform than those of yore. This is fine for commercial growers who are scheduling their cropping, but for th...

Re: Growing / preserving gerkins

If the cucumbers you're growing are the traditional sort, you could end up with them tasting bitter. If any cucumbers do get pollinated, one end will swell (known as "bee stung") and these should be rejected. On the other hand, if you're growing outdoor or ridge sort, which are more akin t...

Re: The Great Allotment Challenge

I've recently been enjoying The Victorian Kitchen Garden on YouTube. When this was first aired, it got more viewers than the footy. The allotment programme wasn't so bad. For sure, short-cuts were made. I'd be interested to see how it develops. It may take a little time for me to warm to the contest...

A flyer dropped through my door the other day:

Loose Body Fat

It was for a gym. On the other hand, maybe they wanted to make soap.

Re: Growing from Seed

I don't give a second though to chucking out seedlings if I've raised too many. I don't see that it's any different from discarding weeds. They are, after all, plants out of place. I find, though, that most seed companies are so mean with the quantities of seeds in their packets that often there are...

Re: When is my Broccoli ready?

The type of broccoli you have there is Purple Sprouting. The stage it is at there is spot on. Simply break off that main head to harvest it. Purple sprouting broccoli will continue to produce over many weeks: side shoots will form which you can harvest, again by simply breaking them away from the ma...

Re: Growing / preserving gerkins

I've grown gherkins without doing anything differently from how I would grow cucumbers and they have been abundant. Unlike glasshouse cucumbers, gherkins need to be pollinated, which could be why sometimes fruitlets are seen to appear but then fail to fully develop. Stepping in with a rabbit's foot ...
