Leaf miner
My beetroot, which were growing fabulously, have been hit with leaf miner before I could get enviromesh over them. I've stripped nearly all the infected leaves off and put the mesh over, but I expect it will spread again. How badly does this affect the actual beetroot - total wipeout, just growing s...

Black Hole
I guess we've all been gasping at the photo of the black hole, 55million light years away. But what I want to know is how do we know that it's still there? It could have ceased to exist 54 million years ago!

Re: Social Care and a legal milestone.
Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that FGM shouldn't be banned, just that it should be re-named MGM!

Re: Social Care and a legal milestone.
Rather than banning FGM perhaps it should be extended to men - starting with Christopher Chope and proceeding to those who rape women.

roof moss
My bungalow roof is infested with moss, bits of which are continually getting washed down and blocking the gutters. I have a tub of ferrous sulphate moss killer and am considering spraying the roof with a solution of this (4oz per gallon?). I appreciate that the dead (hopefully!) moss will also fill...

Re: Quince
I have a very mature (perhaps 80 years old) quince tree which this year fruited heavily with pear-sized fruit. Lots of them went to a local pub and several friends for quince chutney, which we benefited from. Years ago I made quince wine which turned out very pleasant, though strong tasting. Don't t...

In the original post doesn't the word boiled refer to the fruit, not the cake? ie a cake with boiled fruit in it?

Re: Please can we have some more 'funnies'?
Second true Norfolk tale, told to me by the previously mentioned Albert Hansell, who as brewery club secretary was friendly with the local police. He was surprised to read in the local paper that the Three Tuns pub, on the Norwich ring road, had been summoned for allowing drinking after hours, to wh...

Surprised you observant lot didn't pick me up on calling a cricket match umpire a "referee". Took pity on me, I suppose.

Re: Please can we have some more 'funnies'?
I used to work for a brewery in Norfolk, which was a great home for all sorts of amusing stories, so I thought I'd contribute one or two - all true, I swear! At Bullards Brewery, in Norwich, they had a sports club, the secretary of which was one Albert Hansell. Albert had lost a leg, which had been ...
