I use Bayliss Autovents in the upper half of each door which is a pivoted frame. It is rather expensive as the cylindrs tnd to fail after a few years and one really needs the hydraulic vent openers if there is much wind. I have platic mesh on the bottom half of each door, covered in wnter with a pol...

Another point aboutwatercress from the wild is that you may find and pick "Fool's -water-cress, Apium nodiflorum . This won't do you any harm when you eat it, indeed Culpeper suggests its use, but it isn't the real thing. There are many websites that have details, such as m I hope to collect th...

Johnboy She who decides says that the range of 0.675 to 1.125 are considered acceptable as cherry tomatoes, anything smaller is rejected and the larger ones are not sold as cherry tomatoes. I note that this year the Gardeners Delight had a fair number within the grade, much like Supersweet 100 did i...

A bit more update frm me. I planted the GD in two polytunnels. Unfortunately 3 of the trials were in a polytunnel which turned out to be inadequate on the soil condition and the garden compost used and they suffered badly from hard top. However I did note,as I think I said before, that the GD from t...

Another year of lettuce has come and gone,I grew Counter successfully but it is a bit small. I happened on a packet of Sherwood from T & M, just right for size and excellent flavour. The troble now is T & M aren't listing it again for 2006, in fact it has just disappeared which is very off-p...

If you want a really early apple of about the same time as Beauty of Bath then try Devonshire Quarrendon, far more character thab B of B.
At the other end of the season Tydeman's Late Orange is an excellent choice.

For nursery I would go to Deacon's, Isle of Wight. Don't bother about an early cooker as you can use the winfalls of anything. For the main cooker it has to be Bramley. I have a massive book "The English Apple". very good for quite a wide range.Of course you will have to ensure that you al...

Enjoy the show but meanwhile you might like to go to the Rapitest pH meter instructions via Google as it says there "push the probe into wet soil and take the reading." Ours is a Rapitest.

If you want the full works, try this for size

measuring pH

Surely it is the other way round,pH is the power of the hydrogen ion (expressed logarithmically) in a solution so can only be measured for liquids.

I don't thonk aluminium is a good choice, it always has an oxide film on the surface which would stop the slug's slime reacting with it. Pippa Greenwood reckons that zinc as in galvanised steel works as well as copper. You might like to try a beer slug trap. A large yogurt pot and lid, cut 2 holes j...

Gardeners Delight variants

Having noticed the variation of size of fruit on Gardeners Delight last year I kept plenty of seeds from the cuttings I took from the 2 plants purchased from a local Garden Centre. This year I did a comparison with GD seeds from Suttons/Titchmarsh, Fothergill and two other suppliers and the outstand...

Putting aside the main thread, We are collecting all the rain water we can fromm house roof, shed and greehouse, and have a pipe the length of the garden to tank storage. It is used not only widely in the garden but a supply is provided into the downstairs loo and used when available. Latest water b...
