Re: Garden shredder purchase shared.

I just received the gift of a shredder from my father in law have yet to try it out and as I only want it for sredding small branches canes and prunings it shou...

Re: What is Everyones Favourite Seed Supplier & Why?

Like plum pudding I like Real Seeds, because quantities are generous, descriptions honest, instructions for seed saving excellent - price is fair and if I save the seed I only need to buy them once so it works out cheapest in the long run. I also like seeds of Italy they're tasty, generous quantity ...

Re: Moth caterpillar help required

Some army worms are hairy but i couldn't find an image of one. Birds might be your ally but not in a covered polytunnel. If all else fails a nemasys caterpillar treatment might work well in a tunnel, but at £22 for three treatments its very expensive.

Re: Eden project Working with nature.

Actually at least one thing he talked about is happening right now and not in the next millenium

yes there are other methods of greening the desert, but these desalinisation techniques are old - not next millenium, and were known to Aristotle.

Re: pear rootstock ?

yes I knew it had to come off - but knew very little about quince rootstocks
thank you Felix. It does seem quite vigorous and grew rapidly, hopefully next years crop will be better for its removal

Re: Eden project Working with nature.

Well in my book putting our waste to work instead of in landfilll can't be bad and the schemes he described seemed to be working without the use of a lot of fossil fuel input as it was producing stuff locally. I have never been to the eden project so I would not know about that, its been around some...

pear rootstock ?

My pear produced a shoot from the root which had different leaves, it came away with some root attached. Are pears always grafted on quince ? Do I now have a quince tree if it takes ok - I have potted it up and its looking fine.

Re: Grafted versus non grafted tomatoes.

Yes Geoff, but this time I was comparing grafted to the same variety non grafted and given the advantage of symbiotic fungi which provides the plants with improved nutrient and water access in exchange for some of the sugars the tomato gets from the sun - well when its not raining

Re: Grafted versus non grafted tomatoes.

Realfood, I agree they probably produced better than ordinary toms in growbags or compost - but not as well as the plants in good border soil with the added advantage of rootgrow in the greenhouse which produced more toms and larger fruit too. Hi Westi, yes it has been a weird year, especially for f...

Re: Grafted versus non grafted tomatoes.

I'm glad your toms are doing well plum pudding, the freebies sounded good. They had various varieties on a special rootstock, this year was the first year I tried them, and personally I didn't think it was worth the extra money for tomatoes ! Next year I will trial the peppers, one grafted and one n...
