Re: Early Winter Bits and Bobs.

Hubby and I had our flu jabs last weekend; all fine and no issues. Normally, it's easier to get the cat to the vet than hubby to the GP, and the former requires extreme subterfuge and chain mail gloves. Hubby was very compliant this time around, however. He had flu over Christmas 3 years ago and eve...

Re: What's on the menu?

Sister in law is roasting a goose over at mother in law's, then a bacon wrapped turkey breast for just me and hubby on boxing day. Christmas pud all around, of course, and plenty of other treats. Yum yum yum!

Florence fennel in polytunnel

Browsing through various back issues of KG magazine, I've come across a few mentions of Florence fennel being grown over winter in a polytunnel and ready for harvesting around January; Stephanie Hafferty certainly mentioned it more than once in her articles. Starting the seed in modules, what's the ...

French border closure

So, what do you reckon? A fiver each on the black market over Christmas?

Re: Omelette.

Well said, Westi - how on earth can you dip your soldiers into a fully cooked egg?! Surely, an omelette baveuse is no different to a dippy egg?
I'd rather have baveuse than frisbee, but it's whatever takes your fancy.

Re: Early Winter Bits and Bobs.

Coooo-eeeeeee! Too quiet, eh? I'll soon change that! A combination of work, astronomy matters and fixing broken computers got in the way of things for the last few weeks, but 2 out of 3 are out of the way now, so my thoughts are busily turning to seeds and seed potatoes. I hadn't planned on growing ...

Duly noted, shallot man! My favourite at the moment is Tanquaray seville orange gin - very delicious. Tonic, ice and a squeezed clementine wedge make for a lovely drunk. Sorry, drink.

Radicchio

I've grown 2 varieties of this beautiful vegetable, treviso and verona. Treviso is the longer pointed one, but apparently verona holds better through cold winter. To be honest, I'd probably grow it anyway as it's just so beautiful, but I can't wait for the heads to plump up. My griddle will be good ...

Re: Autumn Bits and Bobs

Blimey, Monika, that's no small feat! We were given a load of water lillies a couple of months ago now. They were rescued from a pond, or to be more precise, the pond was rescued from them, as we have space for them. OH was up to his nicky nacky noos sinking them into the floor of the pond - they we...

Re: Autumn Bits and Bobs

SUNSHINE! We have some this morning - what a joy to see that it's still there! A fierce wind to go with it, mind you, but I'm still happy to have a bit of the fiery orb in the sky. I think I'll finally clear out the straw bales from #2 greenhouse this weekend as they've finally collapsed and there's...

Re: Romanesco as cut and come again..

Bump! I've been harvesting my romanesco for a 2 to 3 weeks now and thought I'd report back on this thread that I started earlier in the year. The reality is that I haven't needed to do 'cut and come again' as the heads themselves are modest and we can use an entire one in one meal as, say, a veggie ...

Re: Autumn Bits and Bobs

Thanks, Primrose. The 10 butternuts don't include the smaller second crop that I harvested before the couple of frosty nights we had. They're in the greenhouse at the moment, so I will bring them in to ripen them up. The others will go and live in the garage as its cool but frost free in there. I ma...

Re: Autumn Bits and Bobs

I used an organic spray against mealy aphids the other day, which have heavily infested my purple sprouting broccoli plants. I couldn't figure out any other way to control them as they were so numerous, but this is only chemical preventative measure that I've used on my crops since I started in the ...

Re: Autumn Bits and Bobs

My #1 greenhouse tomatoes have finally succumbed to blight, so I may well be picking the last of them over the next week. There are still some whoppers in #2 greenhouse so I may not be bereft of them for a little while. The thing I seem to have been picking most of is caterpillars. My brassicas are ...
