Re: Insect Bites

They're back!
It's that time of year again, and suddenly I'm covered in bites. To this day, I've never seen the culprits, but they don't half make their presence known. :x

Re: Harvest bits and bobs

After last year's disastrous crops, both on my allotment and in the garden, I am pleased to say that this year, so far, has been a great success. My freezer is now full of soft fruits, and there are 4 gallons of rhubarb wine and the same of gooseberry brewing away. I am picking French beans, beetroo...

Re: Moles ... and more moles!

I reckon it's still worth a try in your beds, even if they are overplanted. My own garden soil is really fine and loose, but surprisingly I have still managed to make trap-sized holes into the tunnels - though sometimes it does take several attempts before I make one that a trap will fit snuggly int...

Re: Moles ... and more moles!

Are you trapping moles just under grass ? No. All my traps have been set in the beds, amongst the fruit and veg that were being ruined. I don't have a lot of lawn any more, and the moles don't do a lot of damage to it. For that reason, I have concentrated my efforts elsewhere. Actually, that's not ...

Re: Moles ... and more moles!

I'm still finding it hard to believe myself, Richard. By now, any young ought to have left their nests (if those books are to be believed!!!), so I can only suppose that the ones I am catching now are those youngsters looking for their own territory. In other words, every time I 'remove' one, anothe...

Re: New strawberry deaths again

I suspect that most of the strawberry plants that I have lost over the years have died due to lack of water. Some have been individual plants that have been 'lifted' by moles, leaving their roots dangling in tunnels. Others have been on the ends of rows where the ground slopes slightly, meaning more...

Re: Moles ... and more moles!

Number 15 (Number 5 from the front garden.) Been away for 4 days. First thing I did after walking through the front gate was check the traps, and found a live mole in one of the scissor traps. The books say they can only survive about 3 hours without food, so it must have heard me returning and thr...

Re: Bush tucker trial

If it is definitely not safe to use the Bug Clear Ultra on them ,.. I wonder what the commercial growers use on their brassica crops. It's not just that it may be unsafe to use Bug Clear, I doubt also that it would be effective. Insecticides which are formulated to kill piercing and sucking insects...

Re: Moles ... and more moles!

Traps delivered lunchtime today. First mole removed from trap 6 pm! Didn't modify them as suggested here m Bad news was when I went to another part of the garden to check two other traps I frightened a large rabbit. I misread that last bit, Geoff, and thought for a second that you had caught a larg...
