Aubergine Glut

Never thought I would say it as the season seems to have been very slow compared to last year, but I now have loads of aubergines ripening, some of them huge! These are the classic black variety Black Beauty. We are eating some fresh on their own or in dishes such as moussaka but wondered about othe...

Passata Machine

Took delivery of my passata machine yesterday and tries it out on 5 kilos of tomatoes last night, the kids loved turning the handle to squidge them. I was amazed at how a huge pile of fruit was reduced to little more than a cereal bowl of skin and seeds along with a huge bowl of juice. (It was very ...

I get good results now that I have adopted the approach of sowing in drills filled with compost rather than simply in the soil. Germination rates are good, the row is easy to see and hoe around and thining the crop is easy. I am on heavy clay so normally not best suited to root crops. I now get nice...

I second Ferline, this is my 3rd year with it and it is doing very well again.

The fruit can get large, 4 to 5 inches across but most are 3 to 4 inches. Good flavour and colour.

I also grow marmande but find it is prone to blight and greenback. Nice flavour though.

Yes, that seems a little high, especially on the corn.

4oz of pellets a day and 1oz of corn per day is about the level they need.

So for 6 hens 24 ozs of pellets and 6 of corn.

It is a bit of a hard one to answer depending on how they are kept. I have 4 hens, they get layer pellets in the morning when they are restricted to their run. On average they get through about pint of pellets every 2 days. Not sure of the weight, sorry. Then about mid morning or lunch time they are...

I think there is a definate variety impact. I have 6 types on the go, all treated exactly the same and only San Marzona have shown BER on the first truss. Sungold, GD, Ferline, Maramande, Tumbler, etc have all been fine.

Only trouble is Marmande is suffering from Greenback!

Never tried the salt either but would think it is hard to get the water/salt to stay on the leaves, brassica leaves are generally water repellant, water beads on the leaves and then runs off the surface on the whole.

Just a thought...
