Re: Charlotte potatoes

Hi Primrose,

That does sound tasty, regardless of the state of your potatoes to start with :) I shall give that recipie a go.

Re: Raised Vegetable Garden - Railway Sleepers

Thank you Barney, Richard and Greenman. I have to say your views reflect my gut feelings, so I will go with those and head for the compost heap when the border gets built eventually! Hopefully that will happen soon, because spurred on by all the comments and tips on here and my first issue of KG rec...

Re: Tomato Food

Thank you all for your advice, that will save me a few pennies, and probably use up this year's Tomato food! I think I may have planted my lettuces too close together. They are Red Cos, bought as small plants and I put them in to a trough I had spare. They have grown very tall - very tasty and no se...

Tomato Food

I did quickly use the search facility but couldn't find the answer to my quick question. Can I use tomato food to feed my courgettes, runner beans and lettuces? I ran out of the general purpose food a couple of weeks back and one of my pot grown courgettes is starting to look a bit sorry for itself....

Don't want to go off topic, but I am loving the idea of a 'trained boffin'. :D

Re: Carlingford Potatoes

Dear OH, Thanks for the help. I followed some of the links on here last night and found myself on the potato blight notification website so I now feel slightly better informed on the subject than before. I certainly hadn't realised how serious it could be. The Carlingford's will be my first foray in...

Re: Month By Month Growing Chart

Hello John,

Thank you, I shall forget the fleece then. A good tip about the watering, that is the first thing I would have done if they dried out inadvertently. I shall be vigilant to make sure they don't! Next year I hope to grow them in a raised bed which should be better for them.

Re: Month By Month Growing Chart

Hi again OH, my carrots were a pack of 3 types, summer, autumn and maincrop I think. I have just started stirfrying the thinnings from the summer crop pot, and they still seem a way off being what I would consider carrot size! I put the maincrop ones into the biggest tub on the basis that they would...

Re: Carlingford Potatoes

Thank you Old Herbacious, I am not entirely clear what blight is yet, I keep reading about it and realise it is bad, but what the signs are I don't know. I am hopeful that I might avoid it as no one has grown potatoes around here for several years. I and my two neighbours are quite isolated by field...

Carlingford Potatoes

I have ordered these tubers from the KG shop. Does anyone have any experience, tips or guidance for growing these potatoes. I plan to grow them in bags of my own compost as I have no ground/border space.

Re: Month By Month Growing Chart

Thank you for posting the links to these checklists. I noticed that the allotment month by month suggested lifting carrots in October and November. My carrots are growing in large pots (approx 125 ltr of compost), will they be ok in the pots until we use them or do I need to lift them before the fro...

Re: chicken manure in compost

Thanks for the replies, I have high hopes for the compost next year, although sadly we may be down to just 5 chucks, next doors dog has just savaged one She may be ok, our best friend (vet) is coming tonight so we will wait and see, but she has a rather nasty gash in her back. The chickens have an e...

chicken manure in compost

Hi all,

I have half a dozen chickens and a rabbit. I am now adding their manure to the compost heap, does this affect how soon the compost can be used? Will it burn plants if used too soon?

Many thanks,

Re: Raised Vegetable Garden - Railway Sleepers

First can I start by saying how glad I am that I have found this forum, with so many friendly, knowledgeable people on it. I have answered most of my questions in the last few days just browsing/searching around! This summer has been my first real foray into veg growing, mainly in large containers a...
