Re: Allium leaf minor

my garlic is a complete disaster this year. first time in 21 years that I'll have to buy garlic. I think it was the weather. the ones that aren't mouldy are teeny tiny and not worth bothering with. the elephant garlic looks good above ground, who know what's going on beneath.

Re: Rhubarb year 1

we pick rhubarb (red or green!) until the end of June (unless it is floopy of course), then the oxalic acid content starts to increase, so we leave it alone, and it does it's thing until it gets cold and starts to die back for the winter, which is when it gets a thick layer of compost or poop or both.

Re: Mares Tails

We are also being plagued to death by it, over the last 3 or so years. So I'd be grateful of any advice too. Currently, we are digging it out as much as possible, then where we can't dig, pulling it out from the top.

Re: Another cloche/hoop option

when using water pipe hoops, we throw the mesh over, place long pieces of timber along the ground at the sides, then kind of gather and roll up the ends, so that they fit snugly and pop a couple of bricks or chunky piece of timber on to weigh it down. We don't have the luxury of time, so we generall...

Looking great Richard!

I have never hemmed my enviro mesh, and we treat it quite badly. It seems to be ok still!

Re: Strawberries dilemma.

I find plenty of the little fellas right inside the fruits!

Richard, I do not use straw, we have found it just makes better hiding places for slugs and snails.

Re: Strawberries dilemma.

Hi Richard, we leave the net off until they begin to ripen, that way you have a better chance of pollination. our net is about 1.5cm, so bees can still get in if they are persistent. ours are always eaten by slugs and, strangely, woodlice. we have found it sensible to pick before properly ripe, then...

Re: Another cloche/hoop option

Pleased you are now going to use the enviromesh. But the idea was to soak the broccoli before it went into the saucepan. Sorry I should have made it clearer. Beryl. No no! I understood, but it never worked!!! I left it swimming in cold salty water for ages. This was years ago though, our enviro mes...
