Raised beds

Hi Trevor. If your on the Derry's field allotment, I personally wouldn't put raised beds on your plot for the first year. It was only cleared in the winter. There was all sorts growing there, bramble, horsetail comfery, couch bindweed, and lots more.[the blackberries were good, I'll miss them] It's ...

Re: Horsetail and Couch grass

Hi Snugglebum and Phil S As Peter says Ht and Cg are very persistent. Neither will have a problem with going through woven fabric. I've had my plot for 12 years [about 40yards x 35yards] and decided not to use chemicals. The bottom end of my plot was rife with Ht, bind weed [Bw] and Cg. Being a carp...

Onions

I've been planting a couple of rows of lettuce between my onions for years. I sow very thickly and treat the lettuce as cut and come again. I take out a few seedlings for transplanting else were on the plot. When I say thickly I mean what you would get in about,8 or 10 packets of seed, going into a ...

Polytunnels

I put some roof vents in a tunnel at the HDRA Yalding. One at each end of the tunnel. Unfortunately it is in the staff only bit. But you can ask to see them. It definitely kept the temp down. They had automatic vent openers which meant not constantly keeping an eye on the temp. It's best to put the ...

Robins

Robins have more lives than cats. Digging over the old leek bed yesterday morning, I must have nearly buried this robin at least a dozen times. Glad I didn't it had such a sweet voice. Dose anyone know if it's usual for robins have more than one nest on the go at the same time? Last year a robin had...

Soft hands

I found GOOD OIL a cold pressed hemp oil the best. it's a cooking oil for pasta, salads, etc. I find it better than the body shop hemp cream, the oil absorbs quicker. I heard on the radio it helps stop Eczema,or Psoriasis, or both, from itching.

Mountains

I know what you mean Tigger. The mountains in my house seem to be growing since I got a computer.[about as fast as my weeds] And seeing I'm the house hubby I better get my act together. The other half doesn't moan to much, bless her.

Chard

I like it sautéed. Just bung some chopped onion in a pan, with butter/oil a tea spoon of cumin seeds almost any veg, and chard. Rough chop the leaves. When veg is almost cooked put leaves on veg, put lid on for a couple of minuets. then serve.

Asparagus

I used to have an asparagus bed, but it got invaided badly by bindweed, so I had to dig it up, and they didn't like that. Got a six dotted around the plot now, all self sown.

I like eating it raw, tasts like crunchy peas. Not to much gets home. Hope the wife dosn't read this.

Snails

Morning All. Anyone got any ideas on this. I got angular plastic water butt which sits about 2 inches off the ground. I normally empty and clean it every year in early sprig. When I move it there's maybe a 150 or so snails under it in hibernation. But its a death trap for a lot of them. Some critter...
