I don't think this will do any harm, I did the same with my cucumbers to let some more light through. I also cut off a lot of tomato leaves to allow sunlight to hit the ripening fruits!

Re: Early Summer Bits and Bobs.

Elmigo, I think you could have squeezed a few more in there.....I can see bare soil at the end! Hehehe I could have done that. Maybe next year, or a great place for some kale during the winter season... Finally I have a cucumber doing well in the greenhouse at home. I thought they would love the tu...

Re: Early Summer Bits and Bobs.

The first year using a greenhouse has been a very satisfying and succesful experiment so far! It has two varieties of cucumber, two varieties of melons and two watermelon plants on one side. The other side is all 8 different tomato plants. The sweet pointy peppers are outdoors as they seem better re...

Re: Kiwano (horned melon)

Looking great! Have you seen any flowers already? Mine are still waiting, probably due to the cool and rainy weather. Despite being in a greenhouse, the soil around it gets soaked.

It's not just a knot look from one angle, it is a real knot.
Very bizarre!

Re: Early Summer Bits and Bobs.

Thanks for the gooseberry tips, I'll wait for as long as possible and also got nets over them to play it safe We're just cooling down this week from four days of 28 to 32 at maximum. The greenhouse got up to 43 with both the window and door wide open. Some thunder passed and rain is expected for the...

Re: Early Summer Bits and Bobs.

Meanwhile a few things are doing well. These are old bushes, they were well established when we took on the plot in 2006 and are still very vigorous (slightly too vigorous to be honest!) When do you harvest those gooseberries for the sweetest taste and eating them raw? Mine are slowly turning red b...

Re: What I learned about strawberries...

Honestly, the Cherryberry is advertised as cherry red but the fruits don't look quite like the image on the label. They don't taste any less though, but the white strawberries (Pineberry) when fully ripe tastes sweeter than any other!

Re: Kiwano (horned melon)

Never heard of problems with cross pollination between cucumber family members. If it's a problem I should notice because in the greenhouse there are 7 different varieties of Curcubitaceae happily growing on the same trellis/net. Currently this is what my kiwano looks like in the corner of the green...

Re: What I learned about strawberries...

Oh for me the white ones definitely taste different and a lot more sweet even... How is this variety not grown as much commercially? Honestly they often look yellowish-white and don't look as tasty as the red ones, but the so called pineberry is very, very sweet!

Re: Kiwano (horned melon)

how it will ever be strong enough to bear the weight of any fruit They can crawl really well, just like (water)melons. Eventually the parts that bear fruit could be supported by a wire carrying a small net or something. Watermelons require the same kind of support. Mine looked VERY fragile as well,...

Re: Kiwano (horned melon)

The new messages reminded me to post another kiwano update! Almost forgot about it as I'm quite busy, but not too busy to take care of the plants (fortunately). In the meantime a lot has changed and they have been placed in the greenhouse as well as outside. The kiwano shoots go literally everywhere...
