Today
Today I planted out some over winter onions. That have been sulking in a module try. They should have gone out early October. But never seemed to get round to it.
Wonder how they'll turn out.

Hi Compo. If it's the cabbage white butterfly thats the problem, netting's ok but the siltiest chink in the netting thats big enough and they are in. I don't use netting. I find when the cabbages are big enough the slugs and snails eat their eggs, and what they miss I hand pick. The biggest problem ...

Another way of planting leeks
Instead of just dibbling them in the ground. Dig a trench a spit deep incorporate some compost or manure in the bottom. when your leeks are ready to transplant dib your leeks in the bottom of the trench. Water in as per. But don't fill in the trench. It'll fill in over the season by its self. when y...

Mantis tiller
Hi happymouse
I have a Honda tiller and it's OK it starts first time, even after 6 months in the shed. One of my allotment neighbour has a Mantis and it sounds like a chainsaw.
Give me a 4stroke petrol tiller any day.

Moon Phase Planting
Dose anyone out there plant by the phases of the moon. We've been doing it for about ten years. The idea is to plant between a quarter moon through a full moon to a quarter moon. So you have 14 days to plant out of a 28 day cycle. I know it sounds a bit tung in cheek, but you do get better crops. Yo...

Canes
I don't like using canes, and I don't think the beans do ether. I'm lucky to have excess to as much hazel sticks as I need. As for getting them in the ground I use an iron bar, the type they use at road works for hanging up that orange netting. It's about 3/4" thick with a hook at the top and a...

Swedes
Can't say I've had a lot of success. I garden on sandy soil, and they prefer clay I think. I've tried sowing in a row and thinning, sowing in a seed bed and transplanting. More success with transplanting. Going to try again this year, with some extra lime. I did manage to get some to grapefruit size...

Slugs and Snails
Has anyone tried bran to attract slugs and snails. Put some bran around the plant you want to protect, the slugs will eat the bran instead. If you put some on the patio or the path in the evening in the summer, you wont have to go out at night and collect them, they'll still be eating it in the morn...

Strange roots
Hello Garlic Guy.
You didn't say how deep the root were. Nettle roots don't go very deep, and I think couch are thiner and white. My guess is bind weed. If it gets restricted it dose bunch up. Like the others said you'll find out soon.
Happy gardening.

Hello to all.
The first time on this forum.
Tip: If your Brussels or cabbages didn't heart up, leave them in and when the flower buds appear, pick and lightly steam or eat raw in salads. A real bonus when there's little about on the veg plot.
