Hello David and All We have also grown GD for the first time this year and we are very pleased with it. But then we bought it because we wanted a cherry tomato(?!) I've just done a google search on GD and the various results have unanimously described it as, 'cherry', 'small', 'smallest' and 'bite-s...

Sally Wright's Curried Courgette Soup Recipe
Hello Sally - here's your recipe. I made it last year and it was great. Also tried it with runner beans and that worked well too. Curried Courgette Soup 2lb diced courgettes 1 oz butter 1 tbsp coriander powder 1 tbsp curry powder 1 tbsp honey (any kind) 2 pints chicken stock Fry the courgettes in th...

The quantity shouldn't matter, as long as the ratios remain the same. I used 10lb of redcurrants in my first batch of jelly this year and it was just fine. In fact, it is the most perfect jelly I make for consistency, clarity and the right amount of 'wobbliness'. Just never seems to go wrong for me....

Not sure why they are bitter, but I grew up with bitter cucumbers in NZ. I thought the bitterness had been bred out of them since those days. But adding to Sarahlee's comment re peeling them, the other trick is once you have peeled them, run a fork vertically down the outside and all the way around....

Beetroot Dip?
Somewhere I have a recipe for Beetroot Dip, which is very nice. If interested, I will see if I can find it for you. Last night I put raw, grated beetroot into our usual green salad. Wash it in a sieve once grated, strained and dried in kitchen towel. Great for colour and didn't turn the lettuce red....

Hello Chantal Not completely sure what went wrong for you, but one thing I notice is the fruit:sugar ratio you use is identical to what I do, but with the resulting juice, not the fruit. So where you use the equivalent of 3 cups of sugar to 4 cups of fruit I use 3 cups sugar to 4 cups of strained ju...

Redcurrant Pie
This is a German recipe and is a great way to use redcurrants less conventionally. Not only does it taste great, but looks good too. I used fresh redcurrants, but I am sure frozen will work just as well. Also, I didn't make the pastry - used a block of shortcrust from the supermarket (and the redund...

Historically we don't water our onions. But this year has been so dry, they are smaller and less developed than last year's crop. Significantly. These are varieties we have grown for some years now, so are familiar with how well they normally do. On talking to others who routinely grow onions, their...

Well I haven't read Robin Cook either and Coma was was the only book of his I had heard of. Just completed a search on his books and they do look remarkable similar to Tess's (or the other way around). I'll have to grab a Robin Cook or two and compare the writing styles of the two authors. Is he good?

Chantal, I hadn't heard of Tess Gerritsen until last year, when I bought one of her paperbacks for £1 at a local bookstall. I have now read all her medical thriller books - they're great, although some are stronger than others. I would recommend 'Harvest' or 'Vanish' as the two best, IMO. I couldn't...

Hello Malk I had (and have) the same problem! Last year I foudn a German recipe for Redcurrant Pie, using egg whites. And redcurrants of course! It went down very well last year. Sweet, but with a real tanginess from the redcurrants. If of interest, let me know and I will post it for you. And how ab...

Persimmons & Pawpaws
I have some experience of both Persimmons and Pawpaws. Both grown in NZ and I grew up eating Pawpaws off our tree at home. Tigger's description re Persimmons being like orange tomatoes is bang on. Only they taste disgusting. To me, at least. My stepfather loved them, but to me (having only ever tast...
