Re: Open fire or Stove

Hello Kevin, Lots of good replies from previous posters, a couple of points, nobody mentioned the cost/neccessity of having a woodburner/multifuel stove installed professionally, there are all sorts of issues surrounding HETAS cetificates and the possibility of problems with your house insurance etc...

Re: Sharp English apples

I knew an old boy in Essex who swore by Bramleys as an eating apple, he would pick them, wrap each one in newspaper and store them in his shed on shelves, he would start eating them after christmas when they were 'meller' as he put it.

Re: Stolen peas

Normally, on our site, we do not suffer a lot from theft of produce, sheds broken into and tools taken, midless vandalism yes, but they usually leave the veg alone! This summer has been totally different, we have had all sorts of stuff taken, most annoyingly, be people who know veg. Spuds neatly dug...

Re: B & Q Organic Living Tomato Food withdrawn from sale.

Some time ago, I posted about the problems that I have been having with my greenhouse tomatoes this year. The only thing different with my method this year is the compost, own brand from a major retailer, not going to say who, just in case! I am convinced that what has happened to my tomatoe is some...

Re: Stirrup Cup

A Stirrup cup is a particular type of cup, usually silver, that the hunting fraternity use for a final drink before the hunt moves off. They usually take the form of a fox or horses head, the unusual feature is that the cup does not have a stem or base, as they are meant to be passed from rider to r...

BBC Countryfile programme

Hello, me again, did anybody catch the Countryfile programme on Sunday evening? I was interested in the item on Garlic growing on the Isle of Wight, I was interested in how they stored their garlic in warm, dry conditions in what was in effect a large grrenhouse. Does this method of storage hold tru...

Boiling a kettle!

Ok, not a gardening question, but hopefully you good people out there could settle an argument between my wife and I. Is it cheaper to boil an electric kettle of water, or boil a similar amount of water on the gas ring on the gas cooker? I realise that it may make a difference depending on your ener...

Re: These are a few of my least favourite things.

The ultimate has to be people who say 'can I get' instead of 'may I have', where and when did this appear? It seems particularly used in food outlets. While we are on the subject. People who think giving way to the right at roundabouts does not count where cyclists are concerned. The person who swip...

Cape Gooseberry

Anybody know anything about these? I had a couple of plants given to me in the spring, I planted these in large tubs and they have grown in to large lush plants. According to the limited information in my book on fruit growing, they should have flowered and started to form small fruit by now. What I...

Re: Tomato problems

Hello everybody, Have just been away for the weekend, and some, again, not all of my tomato plants are looking very poorly, see my earlier posts on this matter. The odd thing is, any fruits that have formed do not seem affected. Now the leaves on the worst affected plants are turning yellow/brown fr...

Re: Tomato problems

Hello Peter. I wondered when someone would make a posting about this, it has happened to me for the first time this year. Some, but by no means all of mr greenhouse tomato plants have been affected by what you describe. The only thing I can put it down to is excessive heat/sun that most of us experi...
