Re: WORMERY ANYONE ?

I've just acquired a Wormery from freecycle and was trying to work out what to do next.

I can see I need to buy some worms, and get some material to start them off in.

I was wondering about just taking some compost out of a normal compost bin. Would that work for the material ok?

Re: Pea pod problem

Yes, that is what I suspect. Googling does not seem to bring up anything that looks like this. I looked again today, and there are a few leaves on some of the plants with patchy marks, but google does bring anything up that looks like this as a problem. The closest looks like the mozaic virus, but t...

Re: 2014 Slug Invasion

PLUMPUDDING, I wonder what it is you are doing that makes them work for you. Are you literally just doing what the instructions say, or are you also doing other things?

Pea pod problem

Hi there,

Does anybody have any ideas what this is on my pea pods? It looks like some sort of pollen, but I don't think it is. It doesn't rub off, and there does not appear to be anything wrong with the leaves or vines.

I'm growning these in a polytunnel.

Could it just be heat?

Re: 2014 Slug Invasion

I imagine the idea is that you put the fence around smaller areas and then use some other control to eradicate them within that area. It doesn't look like it's that complicated, especially if you have raised beds.

Re: 2014 Slug Invasion

The lastest issue makes reference to an electric slug fence. Has anyone tried this out?

Re: Sweet potatos and crop rotation

Assuming I was to make some kind of wigwam for them to climb up, how much space should I set asside for 1 plant? would 1 meter x 1 meter be enough?

Re: Sweet potatos and crop rotation

Hi Westi,
I'm told one of your local specialist garden centre's will be getting in some plants next week.
What's you view of preparing the bed? What do you do?

I like the idea of planting through plastic (as was mentioned above), as I understand they have a habit of rooting

Re: Hot bed???

I've now got various bits of fungus growning out of the hot bed. Should I just leave them be, or do you think I need to get rid of them?

Note the soil temperature in the hotbed is still about 4-5'C warmer than the soil temperature right next to it.

Re: Grape roots outside of polytunnel?

Thanks Sally. I guess I need to decide if I really want to hack a hole in the tunnel.

Re: Automatic door opening system

Good point, it might need the weight for the closing, but not need it for the opening.

In that case I could probably use something like this:

Automatic door opening system

I'm starting to think about making an automatic door opening system for the polytunnel. I'm wondering if I can re-purpose a greenhouse vent opener such as this: m What's not clear to me, is if the vent opener relies on having the weight of the window for it to work. If this is the case, then I guess...
