Re: Cookbooks vs restaurants

A good read is Michael "Pollan's "Food Rules".
Referring to process food products: "Don't eat anything your great-grandmother would not recognise as food" :D :D

Re: Cookbooks vs restaurants

Rice porridge (congee) is very popular in Asia.
A quick search brought up a bunch of savoury oat porridges but, uh, don't think I can face that for breakfast - I don't think I am that adventurous.

But good on Mr Primrose for giving it a go! Let us know if finds a winner

Re: Cookbooks vs restaurants

Oh, Primrose, that is fabulous! Local busnesses that go the extra mile for the community should be cherished. :D I am lucky enough to even have a (fresh) coffee roaster local to us - they have lots of info about the farmers/producers and give a personalised service. When the outdoor market was shut ...

Re: Cookbooks vs restaurants

Oh, no! I had Norovirus years ago (husband's entire company struck down when caterer on zero-hours contract came in unwell - he passed it to me- very nasty!). Aw, that is a lovely gesture! Love pea and ham soup: I made some recently and the pepper grinder "exploded" apart into it and we we...

Re: Cookbooks vs restaurants

Sorry - sadly been away with family circumstances. Yes, and I think COVID put the nail into quite a few local food businesses. But my local farmer's market gives an outlet to local small farm & food businesses as a priority, so we are lucky. Too true - if you want a local business/ service, you ...

Re: Cookbooks vs restaurants

True! My mom worked 3 jobs to keep things going when I was a child. Sometimes reliance on easy meals is just the practicalities of life and keeping things moving. Friday night takeaway pizza while she worked was a common theme. But I work a lot of young people who just CBA, for instance, to go to th...

Re: Growing betel leaves for miang kham

I have to say my replies over the last 30 years have got more and more (deadpan) sarcastic  My family thinks I sound English and posh, my friends here make raspberry noises when I tell them: “you’re not posh, you’re foreign!”. Polite people ask if I am Canadian  Hubby says the more annoy...

Re: Cookbooks vs restaurants

Ah, REAL cooks in the US use weights. My background is in science, so scales are easy. I took a baking course a few months ago with my OH and I was shocked some many "foodie" Brits do not know how to use a scale properly. I do like to peruse the charity shops and market stalls- lots of gre...

Re: Growing betel leaves for miang kham

Not rude at all: I am from the US but I used to work on projects all over Europe. The bizarre question is (after learning I have been living here for 30 years) "do you like it here" The US main office for one company I worked for was in California and they did not believe I was not English...

Re: Cookbooks vs restaurants

I really don't watch TV or Tik Tok, instagram, etc. for recipes and ideas. I have found some food writers that "sync" with what I like, so I usually will take a look at their recommendatons and they sometimes pan out. Even American ones! But no "lifestyle" promoters, ha-ha. My cu...

Re: Growing betel leaves for miang kham

I understand: I have been "overseas" in the UK for over 30 years! Some stuff still trips me up but I am coping, ha-ha.

Re: Cookbooks vs restaurants

Ha, asking to give up cook books is like asking to give up plants! I have three bookshelves full. But I do go through every few years and find some that I have not used and bring them to the charity shop to hopefully make someone else happy and make the charity a few coins. I just have to make sure ...

Re: Growing betel leaves for miang kham

Hi! I have not tried it but I saw that Chiltern Seeds has Oyster Leaf on their list. Sounds like it might ne worth a go! I thought I knew a supplier for the Curry Leaf but, sadly no. I did see that Plants4Presents often carries them, but there a waiting list (!) https://plants4presents.co.uk/grow-yo...
