Gooseberry fool variation

I'm sure we've all got our favourite version of this, but here's mine. Makes 2 very generous (greedy husband) helpings: 150g/6 oz gooseberries, small, hard & green sugar to taste a slosh of elderflower cordial 150 ml double cream 150 ml greek yoghurt Cook the goosegogs with a small amount of wat...

Frozen parsley

Hi Primrose, Sorry for the late reply, I'm just back off holiday and have found, like you, all my established parsley going to seed. I have sown some more, but it's a bit too small to cut yet. I cut lots of the old stuff, chopped and stuffed into small containers, about the capacity of 4 match boxes...

We could do with some of that rain down here! My husband's been putting in water butts anywhere there's a downpipe, but there isn't much prospect of them getting even their bases wet at the moment. As for June, it's like the costa del Bournemouth down here at the moment with bodies lined up like siz...

It might be worth trying a few cuttings if you wanted even more of the stuff. I didn't think it would survive last winter and pulled off most of the longer branches/twigs to dry & eat, but the new growth is really dense and lush and much bigger than it's original size last year. Worth cutting ba...

Perhaps I could persuade my next door neighbour to put them on his very stinky barbeque - it won't smell any worse than his usual Sunday afternoon cremation session!

I had my first harvest of baby spinach leaves this morning. The variety was matador, they were 29p from Lidl. I sowed them in modules a few weeks ago, then planted out and they've been doing really well. I'm very fond of perpetual spinach, but these were lovely. I pulled off the leaves that were big...

florence fennel

I've been having a read of my kg magazine, newly arrived today, in particular the stuff about florence fennel which is one of my favourites. I thought they were a little harsh on its uses and almost implied a lack of versatility. I half expected them to start on with a victorian view of vegetables, ...

composting mealy aphid

I cleared away all my old broccoli today, which has an impressive infestation of mealy aphid - is it okay to chuck the leaves, aphids and all, onto the compost heap or will they survive to infest another day?

tarragon tougher than I thought!

I was mooching around in between sessions of clearing away the broccoli when I noticed that my french tarragon, which I thought had been killed off over winter, has lots of lovely new lush growth. I was really chuffed. I'd have been even more chuffed if I hadn't just bought a new plant last week! :)

Hi Ray,
I think I know the range you mean - I spotted them in a local garden centre a couple of weeks ago and thought they were very expensive, but the seeds from this company usually seem overpriced to me!

Hi Colin,
I read somewhere over the last couple of weeks that some of the winter squashes do improve their flavour noticably if they're stored for a month or two before eating. I'm afraid I can't remember where I read it, but it was either a cookery book or seed catalogue.

Many thanks, Alan. Can I use the same stuff that I would use on camelias & rhododendrons, etc. as they seem to prefer acidic soil?

raspberries with yellow leaves

Evening all, I have a few varieties of summer raspberries, all no more than 2 years old. Some of them have very yellow leaves - all except the central veins are very yellow. I suspect that they're lacking something, though I don't know what. Apart from the odd colour, they appear healthy and have an...

Angi - you're braver than me! I've got loads of big beautiful tom plants to go out, but the weather forecast I looked at for Bournemouth (metcheck.com) showed it possibly dropping to 2C, so I chickened out till next week! Although my garden is very sheltered, the allotment is very exposed and I didn...
