I honestly don't know. It must be somewhere in the region of 130-140, but some are given away some are sold, new ones hatch and old ones die. We'll no doubt do a census before the winter to see where we're at.

Guarded by geese

Well, it worked for the Romans when the sacred geese warned of the Celtic invaders from Gaul!

Autumn chick pic

Next season's crop is already shaping up nicely I managed to catch most of this year's hatch of Cream Legbars posing in the sunshine and the cockerel standing proud on his podium. They are eleven weeks old, should be laying before Christmas and will be laying fertile eggs for hatching come the sprin...

Next year's ducks!

We have already planned for next year's duck breeding and the new additions will be Saxony ducks. We bought these five earlier in the year and they are now about five months old and should soon be laying. The are the most beautiful breed both in colour and markings. I have seen them described as the...

A productive year

We are coming to the end of the breeding season - just one more hatch to go (or probably two ;-).
Here's a picture of a bit of the set-up and a couple of the shiny young Rhode Island Reds.

A contented pair

Son and one of the four geese.
These really are sociable and communicative birds; they love people and just look scary to people who are not used to their mock aggression.

EARLY AUTUMN BITS AND BOBS

Well it might just as well be autumn! After an early summer in spring, we now seem to be heading into an early autumn in midsummer. Yet another day of cloud, drizzle and temperature in the mid-teens. I was a good two weeks ahead of usual with my tomatoes, but now they've decided to slow down. Cuts d...
