I always use the fine Vermiculite when sowing. If seeds need light I put a thin layer on top of the compost and sow into it, if they need a light covering I put it on afterwards, if they need a bit more covering I use a 50:50 mixture of Vermiculite and compost, big seeds like Sweet Peas I cover the ...

That was a pleasant productive morning - planted the last 100' of potatoes, half each Charlotte and Maris Piper. The bed had been sheeted over for a couple of months since it was dug. I used a piece of blue dpm that I found when I tidied the garage, weeds had germinated under it showing it warms the...

I guess you've bought your seed but as I have recently discovered how to get to the RHS trials here is the link again m if you scroll down there is a cauli trial. I thought they were hungry things but they appear not to feed them. I might be wrong but I think as they often produce floppy seedlings w...

I don't have a tunnel but looked at them before I bought the greenhouse, I think crop bars are what you are looking for - they go across the hoops so you can put in longitudinal wires.

When RHS did a Chilli trial they planted into 3 litre / 18 cm pots and then the potted plants were plunged into the soil of a tunnel, 44 cm apart in rows 75 cm apart. The idea was that the pots provided some restriction to the roots so the plants did not become overly large or lush. The timetable wa...

Extract from email from cousin's husband visiting Taiwan -
"Yesterday I snacked some pig's ear (just like bacon)
Today I had a hot pot, with jellied duck's blood and select rectums....(no kidding)."

When we first converted the barn we were on spring water. It rotted through two hot water tanks in less than 10 years. The spring gradually failed - I think the farmers who organised it years ago knew more about maintaining the pick up than we did and I think rabbits had played havoc with the bankin...

What are you producing that won't cut up enough to compost? I do use a 2500W Alko electric shredder but process very little from the veg plot through it, it is used to make wood and herbaceous material from the rest of the garden into compost. Two exceptions are Sweet Corn (great fun through a shred...
