Peas

Hello Brenjon

The peas are ready at the same time. It's just the same as sprouting mustard or mung beans. Some might have longer roots and shoots, but it's not a problem. Just plant them the smaller ones will soon catch up

Good value tools

I've never bought a new, spade, fork, hoe, rake, etc. We're lucky in the Woking area. At the top of my road is a small business Handles of Old Woking The chap who owns it scours England's tool actions and the like for old tools. He repairs and sharpens just about any hand tool. I'm into hedgelaying,...

Greenhouse Shading

Hi Compo, I don't think you need shading this time of year. Just ventilating is a better bet. The auto vent openers are very good, but quit expensive. Or it's two or three visits to the greenhouse a day. If I do shade the greenhouse I use green netting it looks a bit like onion sacking. But I only u...

Hanging baskets

Suppose it depends what you've got in them. We've had one out for about 6 weeks with strawberries in. A bit of flees doubled up and draped over the basket I find dose the trick, saves humping them in if frost threatens. A frost is forecast for Surrey tonight.

Peas

The method I use for planting peas I think came from a very early KG mag. It's kind of sprouting them. Put the peas you want to plant in a bucket with a little peat and enough water to make the peat soggy give a good stir, cover the bucket and leave for 7 to 10 days. When you look after this time yo...

Polytunnels competition

I wonder if you uncheck the two boxes at the bottom if it deletes you from the competition without you knowing. I shudder to think how much junk mail you would get if you left them checked.

Hi Chantal. Thanks for the info on shrinking photos, it worked a treat. Still trying to get it on KG. There's so much info to read on the forum, that getting a photo on here takes second place. I just read you got the job of moderator on KG, back in March congratulations, hope we don't work you to h...

Re: Water Well

I've got two wells on my plot. I dug one five years ago, the other is new, and hasn't been used yet. The old one I made by digging a 4'x4'x8' hole. Getting one of those blue plastic drums [45gls] and drilling hundreds of holes in it, cutting a 4" hole in the top. Then I put the drum in the hole...

Leeks

Saute leeks in butter. Add handful of raisins a couple of minuets before leeks are cooked

The recipe comes from a new plot holder on our allotment

Haven't tried it yet, haven't got any leeks. But sounds good.

Raised beds

One thing I've notesed with the few raised beds I have left is the crops on the edges do better than in the middle. I think it's becouse the paths have plastic sheeting with wood chip on top, and the outer plants get some of there roots under the plastic were it's more moist.

Rain

It was suppose to rain all day yesterday. I don't think we had more than 1/4". We haven't had a good down pore for 3 weeks or more. There's a hose pipe ban on the allotment, so watering cans only. I think a lot of people will install water tanks this year. And mulch more. The water table here a...

Bit of a problem

Hello Zena When you do get round to planting out your peat pots make sure the lip of the pot is below ground, otherwise the lip of the pot acts like a wick and will dry out the pot. Some things like being planted deeper like tomatoes and brassicas But things like spinach, beetroot parsnip don't. So ...

Compost bins

I got 3 of the black plastic "Dalek" compost bins, 2 at home 1 on the plot. I find them to small for composting on the plot. As John said they make good rhubarb blanchers. I taped up the vent holes, and put in lose straw. Some of the stems are 2' long+. I just love blanched rhubarb.
