Re: Moths - lack of

A thought about modern car's aerodynamics being the reason for lack of insects on windscreens. I presume anyone driving a Landrover will still get a lot on the windscreen.

I bet they don't.

Re: early Peas

I sowed early in rootrainers, in the greenhouse, this year. After hardening them off I planted outside. At the same time I sowed seed outside. The ones sown outside were producing harvestable peas within two weeks of the others. Having said that I don't have trouble with vermin eating the seed. Rega...

Re: Mid Summer Bits and Bobs - 2017.

Pa, Your comment about your daughter picking produce and forgetting the rest brings to mind an experience a friend had. He was flying away on holiday and his son asked if he could borrow his car. "Yes" he said, "but first you must cut the lawn". When he returned home the lawn was...

Re: Adding grit to compost?

I endorse what OH says. I root cuttings in a 50/50 mix of sand and plain peat. The apparent ease with which Lupins self seed in my gravel driveway has led me to adding grit to compost when sowing these and quite a few other seeds as well. I do use peat based compost though and this seems to retain w...

Re: Ants in Growbag

Ants do of course farm greenfly, which certainly isn't beneficial to anything but the ants.

Re: Watering tomatoes

I grow my tomatoes in the central bed of my tunnel. I have 6" drain cut into 8" lengths and each has two half inch scalops on opposing sides at the bottom so that they sit over a soaker hose. I plant into multi purpose compost in these and feed once per week into the rings. The only "...

Re: Please can we have some more 'funnies'?

I try to eat healthily and I go to the gym three times a week. My cousin, who can't see the sense in it, tells me that he asked his doctors opinion on people who do like myself.
The answer, "They will die healthy".

Re: Please can we have some more 'funnies'?

I remember the corned beef of my childhood And the bread that we cut with a knife When the children helped with the housework And the men went to work, not the wife The cheese never needed a fridge And the bread was so crusty and hot The children were seldom unhappy And the wife was content with her...

Re: The DIG game. DESERT ISLAND GARDENER

Hi Tigerburnie,
I went around the world before I got there, thanks to Pa. The sandy soil is good for growing the potatoes though. It's also a great location for a ship wreck, not that I want another.

Very good fun Pa. Thanks.
