Re: British Gas advert with windfarm

It is extremely dangerous practice, and should be done under no circumstances. Do not rely upon "being careful" to avoid electrocution. You, or somebody else, will eventually make a mistake.

Re: Mares Tail

Not all glyphosate is the same; there are various additives, in particular surfactants, to improve the effectiveness. The Roundup Biactive (on the website Johnboy mentions) is the good stuff !

Re: Quince, do I admit defeat ?

I have exactly the same problem with mine; I'm planning to give the Bordeaux mixture a go this spring, even though I prefer the organic way. 2 quince fruits in 7 years is just not good enough !

Re: Wood / Multi-fuel stoves-fitting of

You can find a lot of discussion about wood stoves on the New House Farm Forum (the home of the family best known from the TV series It's not easy being green): m A soild fuel heat generating appliance which is not installed by a Hetas registered installer, or inspected by the local building control...

Re: Using grow lights to germinate seeds early indoors

I bought an Envirolite kit last year - a lamp, a reflector and hangars. I used it in my conservatory and suspended it above two trays of seeds. It looked impressive but my seedlings - aubergine, tomato, french beans - were all as leggy as usual. Where did I go wrong? A few things to be aware of. Co...

Well Tony, I don't know what sort of weeds your plot had, but speaking from experience, over several years, the very kind offer of the council to clear plots which were weedy to start with simply created a bigger problem. Couch grass, bindweed, etc., merely multiplied - very quickly. On heavy clay ...

I'm not convinced that it is such bad advice. I took on a new lottie last spring, and quite enjoyed watching Joe Swift on Gardener's world go through a similar process. My plot was rotivated twice, I'm told. I still broke my spade digging it ! The idea that you would dig out by hand all the weed is ...

It was only ever "virtual" money. Their assests included loans, ie, money owed to them by others. But since many of the borrowers have borrowed amounts that they have no hope of repaying, the loans no longer have their face value.

Perhaps not completely insane. It's correct that there is no such thing as male and female sweetcorn. However, I have heard it said that in some some varieties of maize at least the peak pollen production is a couple of weeks out from the best time for pollination of the cobs. I have heard this from...

Interesting that the explanations so far stress the extra cost of producing F1 seed. I guess T&M would. Another point of view is that it is actually a short cut - it avoids the years of growing on and reselecting a new cross to produce a stable open pollinated variety. There are now varieties of...

For those with a computer ( ) The seeds of Italy catalogue is available as a very pretty pdf on their web site. I have had good luck with their tomatoes - Rio Grande and Red Pear were great, and you certainly get a LOT of seed in a pack. Not such great luck with peppers though; their Romanian yellow...

Glyphosate is certainly not "Organic" (please, let's not start any arguments ...), but it is one of the more benign options if you need a weedkiller. It is absorbed through the plant leaves, killing only what it makes contact with, and degrades quickly* in contact with soil, so no need to ...

Sounds about right. Apparently world capacity for producing the forged steel components for reactors currently limits construction to 5 per year, worldwide.
